  1. Pre-Dental
I have a big decision to make. I currently work FT and go to school FT. I work for a university and thus they pay for my school. I am pretty much the sole provider of my family of 4. SO my family depends on me financially. My house we are renting is foreclosing and therefore we wont have to pay rent till who knows when. We could pocket a 1000/month to save, plus my sife is adding some income doing an at home day care/dance lessons for little kids. So really we could save 1500/month for the next good bit. The problem here is that the school I attend is free, but they are know as an online school, and I know that Dental schools will not look lkindly on that. I have 48 credits now, and am debating on quitting my FT job, and moving from AZ to BYU-i in Idaho, to live a humble life as a FT student and probably work PT and have my wife work PT. I know that my pay wont be the same as I make currently, but then again we are going to be having a much less over head as far as living expenses are concerend. My question is, should I keep working and save agood bit of money before we move, and complete a few more free classes that will transfer to BYU-i, and attend in the Spring Semester, or should we just make the move, forget saving so much-maybe3-4 months and attend in Jan. This is a big decision to just up and quit a job where I have a secure job and have been there for a few years. HELP😱

This is a very personal decision but if I were in your shoes and I knew I wasn't going to be making as much money and I had mouths to feed, I'd save the $$$.

As far as schools looking upon your non-traditional university units favorably or not - hey, you've got a family; do what you've got to do. As long as you can transfer them to BYU, I don't think you will have any problems but you can always call the schools to make sure.

Does moving to Idaho greatly decrease you expenses and get you closer to family? Before you move, research your chances of gaining acceptance to dental school vs your current state. Also, are you sure that BYU-i will accept all of the classes that you have taken and plan to take? Dental schools do not like to see science classes taken online, so make sure you take them in person. As an older student and a parent, I would save as much as possible and then move if you have to move.

Yes indeed it is a very big decision. The main reason for the move is to expedite schooling and make sure that I attend a reputable college. I already spoke to BYU and they will accept all credits earned since it is a regionally accredited university. Like I said I only have 48 credits completed to date and am still early in the process, but BYU has basically said that if you try to transfer here with more than 90 credits they will deny you admissions. I could start in April for the Spring semester and then do an internship during the summer to make some more money, then back to school FT...I just dont want to take too many credits here where I am currently attending and ruin my chances of acceptance of a future date. My family pretty much lives in Texas, so no big deal anyway. My wife's parents live here, but dont help out too much. As far as a support system, we will have none if we make the move. Living expenses will be less, but we will be living a much more humble life.

Where do you live/residency?

So you are moving to Idaho so you can attend BYU-i? If you're LDS I can understand the desire to attend, but BYU is not the only reputable school out there. Idaho doesn't have a 4-year dental school. You attend ISU for one year and transfer to Creighton. Also, not sure if Idaho is part of WICHE. Have you considered moving to Texas? You'd have a much better chance of being admitted to dental school. You can attend an undergrad state school much cheaper and use some of your financial aid to feed your family. Texas dental schools are a bargain. I strongly suggest you invest in a copy of the ADEA Guide to Dental Schools. Its less than $40 and will show you which dental schools accepted Idaho residents in the last cycle.

I was a stay at home mom before I went back to school. Being at home with kids can be hard if you don't have friends and family nearby. I'm thinking about your family moving to Idaho for a couple of years for undergrad, relocating to attend ISU for one year and moving again to finish dental school at Creighton. Good luck with you decision!

I live in Gilbert, AZ...suburb of Phoenix

If I were you, I would move to Texas and gain their residency. There are three dental schools there and nearly 100% in state students. Your chances will be higher in Texas plus you can attend any cheaper public university or college of your choice.

I am LDS. Im am a non-traditional student at 32 years of age, and have about 60 credits completed. I have 2 children to support and my wife. I do realize that Idaho has no dental school. Im looking at lots of schools. OSHA, Case, UNLV, Creighton, Mid-Western AZ. I did look at Texas, but am keeping in mind the cost of living. I am going to be potentially walking away from my current and stable job in AZ to enroll FT at BYU-i and probably work PT, while my wife works FT/PT. So are you reccomending that I pull my Junior year at BYU-i, and then transfer to ISU for my senior year before applying to dental school?
