So I just got diagnosed with mono... how bad is that for studying/class?

I'm not feeling the brunt of it yet. Actually I feel fine. But in terms of motivation to study and crap... how has mono affected you if you have had it? I've heard about the constantly tired symptom and whatnot... and I'm not exactly going to be going out much for awhile.

I just happen to be entering an exam period... great.

Oh boy...good luck with that! If you don't rest up for 4-6 weeks...you can end up with a swollen spleen and continued relapses for up to a year. I really don't know what to suggest...just be careful you don't physically over-exert yourself...

Wow. I hope you get a mild case or deal with it better. Some people don't get hit as hard as others.

I had it bad. It was many years ago, around this time during my junior year. I was ridiculously tired and had a cold, but the first two times I was tested for mono my test results were negative. By the time I finally tested positive for mono, I was falling asleep during every class (with my head on the desk, completely unable to help myself), sleeping through classes, barely able to eat or swallow because my throat hurt so much (swallowing felt somewhat akin to torture - you knew you were going to have to swallow at some point, and it was tortuous waiting for the moment you gave in), and eventually unable to get out of bed. My mother finally came to take me home, and I was delirious for about two days, wheeled through the airport in a wheelchair, and almost needed IV fluids (I desperately sucked on popsicles until things got a little better to avoid the needles). I think it took a couple of weeks to recover, and I luckily got all of my teachers to let me take exams a week or two after they were actually administered. And if you're anything like me, it may take a few months after that to really get back to your pre-mono state (i.e., able to stay up late).

(PS - My boyfriend at the time who gave me mono was only sick with it for a few days. I broke up with him. Suprised? 😛 )

GOOD LUCK!

I had mono going into my 4th year in college, luckily I was getting over it during the first few weeks of class so it didn't effect me too much. PLEASE take it easy and rest as much as you can, I did that and still ended up with a HUGE spleen (doc told me to not get in a car as much as possible to prevent it from bursting in case of an accident) and liver enzymes completely out of wack. I know it's rough, but if you take care of yourself you'll be ok. It's really the first onset of it that hit me the hardest, after about 2 weeks I was just pretty tired all of the time but without the fever/aches/sore throat. If it hasn't hit you hard yet then it might not. I had this eerie feeling that something was wrong 4-6 weeks leading up to when it him me (aka incubation time, ha!). When it hit, it hit hard like no other! Hang in there. 🙂

Yikes. Good luck. Could be no big deal or a huge problem. I got mono about 11 months ago. I'm still not healthy.

my advice? pretend you're not sick. thats what I did. pretended I wasn't that sick... took my last set of exams and my finals, went home for the summer and spent 4 days in the hospital... riiiight. best decision I've ever made? absolutely not. but I didn't bomb my finals... if you can drop or at least ease up on any other committments, that would be helpful for school work, but I know thats not always possible. good luck and feel better!

I was hospitalized for a week, missed 6 weeks of school, and did not fully recover for almost a year...not something to trifle with...

I still went to class, studied, and practiced gymnastics... I too ended up in the hospital for a few days though 🙂

I'm just coming off it myself. Like phoenix said, swallowing with that swollen throat is a bitch. Ask the doc for prednisone if he didn't already hook you up, and stay hydrated and nap alot. I was really only sick for about a week and a half (luckily my throat started to clear up the day of my first interview).

Thanks for the advice guys. The hospital just called me back, and apparently I have strep throat, as well. Quite the combo... I guess that is what studying/research/volunteering, etc etc blah blah typical pre-med story does to you.

Needless to say I'll probbbbbbly be posting on here a lot more in the coming weeks because I probably won't be leaving my room except for exams and a few other commitments once the readily communicable part of my disease combo clears up.

The funny thing is, I don't ever get sick. Like ever. I used to think that I have the immune system of a horse.

Oh well, thanks for the stories and help again guys.

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that...having mono is going to be rough. One of my college roommates had it one summer...he was out of commision for 4 weeks (which is pretty typical).

I had it in HS and didn't even know it. I had a blood test for something unrelated and they said i was in the late stage of mono. On the other had there was someone in my class that was out for half the year b/c she had it.

Not to scare you, but I got mono/strep after my first semester and almost died. I finished up the semester in typical freshman fashion (studying until 3, then partying) and was totally ragged out by Dec. 15. I really think the only reason I got so sick was becuase I was exhausted and didn't take care of myself.

I think its REALLY important that you get enough sleep and try and keep your stress level as low as possible (ha). Eat healthy and rest as much as possible and you should be fine.

Like others have said, it could be really bad or it could just be a little hiccup in your semester. At my university, it is one of 4 or 5 reasons to legitimately withdraw from school for a semester (medical withdrawl). Good luck!

I'm currently on a medical leave of absence because of mono.

It really depends how bad it is... some people don't even know they're sick and some people (like me) are in bed for a month or two. When I first had it I was just exhausted all the time, but it got worse and worse and I ended up extremely sick, which was when I decided to withdraw and go home. I'd say give it some time and just take very good care of yourself and your health, you may be able to study and keep up in class if it doesn't get too bad.

at least you're not showing sypmtoms yet. Some ppl have mild cases (ie two weeks of cold like symptoms) but others get ****ed up up to a year. Just cross your fingers and rest up.

That sucks. I got it in High School during football season. I was pretty quick and noticed that I could no longer out run other people and was exhausted in the huddle.

I got diagnosed and just rested up. There is not much more you can do but hope you have a mild case (which I did) and hope for the best.

I'd give yourself a lot of time on the assumption that you aren't going to have a ton of energy, (i.e. start studying well in advance) that way when you need to rest, you can.

Wow...I didn't know it could be this bad, seriously. Don't despair though, some of these stories sound like probably the worst that mono can do. I got it MUCH lighter. I came down with it at the beginning of undergrad (surprise, surprise), and it kept me down and fatigued for about a week or so. The only reason I went to the doc was that I looked in the back of my throat coincidentally while brushing my tongue (I'm very meticulous about oral hygiene) and saw alarming white blotches on my tonsils (one of the key diagnostic signs of mono). Of course back then I had no idea what that meant (strep or something?) and decided to get it checked out. A fingerprick later I was told I had it.

Aside from feeling drained and out of it for a week or so and a mild sore throat for a few days, that was all I got. The worst part of it was that I had to lay off working out strenuously for like 2 months. Working out, especially heavy lifting like bench press, squatting, etc. and high impact activity like running can rupture your spleen (which is enlarged in almost everyone with mono), which is potentially fatal if untreated, so take it easy! If you feel any major upper abdomen pain, that's an emergency, get it checked out. Just drink lots of fluids, rest and take it easy, lay off of booze, limit physical activity and hopefully you will follow my easy course and be alright with school and stuff.

Also try to not take any antibiotics for a few months, if you can help it. Some ABX, notably amoxicillin can cause a nasty allergic reaction while you have active EBV infection...including full body rash, fever, and possibly itching and hives. After all mono is viral and requires no meds, but some people get concurrent opportunistic bacterial infections and need ABX to treat them, since EBV messes with your lymphocytes and makes you more prone and vulnerable to attack by other bugs while you have it. I have a friend who got a massive bacterial gum infection while he had mono (his gums were bloody and so swollen, he was biting on them with his molars with mouth at rest) and went to the dentist, who gave him amoxicillin. He started feeling better the next day but at the same time broke out into a horrible, itchy, red full body rash that lasted like 8 days. Sure, his mouth was cured, but everyone at school was wondering what the hell was wrong with him, thinking he had measles or rubella or something and was infectious!

I was diagnosed with mono about 3 months ago, and I never got any serious symptoms. Some people don't. The worst point for me was about two weeks of a bad sore throat; I didn't get the intense fatigue or anything- so don't worry until you have to. Take it easy, and don't play any contact sports (you could rupture your spleen.)

well, thanks for all the advice guys 🙂

Actually, I still haven't felt anything, granted it has only been 2 days since iw as diagnosed. But... my glands in my neck aren't swollen really anymore... they have gone down since I first noticed they were swollen about a week or two ago. Also, my spleen is perfectly fine. I'm a little tired yes, but who isn't.

I'm crossing my fingers that I either have a very mild case or I've actually had it for awhile and didn't know (I had a sinus infection a few weeks ago and a "cold" since then).

Wish me luck.

I knew a guy who had mono undiagnosed for a year. He was subsequently bedridden for another year and became allergic to everything except meat (no joke! When his girlfriend kissed him after eating yogurt, he almost died). He's now even allergic to pepper, so there's not much he can do to flavour the meat. Bottom line: take care of yourself, you don't want to be only eating one kind of food for the rest of your life.

I had mono second semester junior year. It was the worst pain I've ever felt the first week, then about 2 weeks of feeling like you have a cold. Then I felt normal, even though I technically still had it for a couple months after. But it doesn't really have to affect your grades unless you have like 5 tests that first week...

my advice? pretend you're not sick.

This is what I do when I'm sick and I have stuff going on that I can't miss. You know how they say if you think happy thoughts you'll eventually start to feel happy? Well its kind of the same thing- if you don't focus on how crappy you feel you should be able to be functional for a few days anyway.

You should, however, know your limits. Ignoring what your body is telling you is never a good idea.

When I had mono I basically didn't leave the couch for a week and after the first few days of not being able to swallow because my throat hurt so bad, my symptoms mellowed out.

Moral of the story: listen to your body and know your limits, but at the same time, not focusing on being sick may help you get through your exams. Good luck and feel better!

Yep, I do this too. But my doctor HATES it! And it really isn't worth it. Last year, when I had pneumonia, I had to be rushed to the ER twice and I almost passed out in my shower one morning while I was getting ready for class (and then when my fiance wouldn't let me go to class, I felt so guilty I couldn't even handle it)!! So, yeah, I agree to just listen to your body. Studying in bed isn't so bad!

> 4,000mg Vit C each day and you'll be golden.

and i mean REAL Vit C, not from pills or orange juice crap: put lemons into your tea, eat lemons, broccoli, and tons of greens.

works like a charm.

Step 1: Quit kissing da ladies ...😉

Sorry ... I didn't want to make light of your situation, it's just that you hear mono you think 'the kissing disease.' Hope you feel better, and as said before; rest and vitamin C !!!

Gotta recommend Viscous Lydocane for the sore throat--- I had Bilateral abscesses on my tonsils because of the mono---- After a week in the hospital I was ok.... heh

Take it easy and hope it's not vicious!

I was apparently one of the lucky ones. I went in to the doctor for another illness (turned out to be mycoplasma pneumonia) but they were freaked out when my blood said I had mono and mycoplasma. Talking to the doctor, it was likely I had developed mono and gotten over it relatively asymptomatically earlier in the year when I had sick contacts with it, but was still testing positive.

man, I am actually just recovering from mono myself, I went to see the doc because I felt soooo tired earlier in the semester, and was basically functioning at about 10%, then they told me I had mono. But being tired was about all I had tho, maybe a few days with a sore throat. But Hang in there, I am not doing as well as I want to but I am still doing well. Oh and lay off of any activities that you do not absolutely need. Those adcoms will understand( I hope!)
