ok, I went to sushi bar with my friends and we were just talking about bunch of stuffs and I said I want to become a doctor (dentist) in the future and this girl said you are gonna be a dentist not a doctor.... I am so mad the fact that she dissed a dentist like that... and she said dentist is not doctor... she said why do we call chiropractor a chiropractor, not a doctor... and I am so mad at it.... isnt dentist deserve same rank as doctor? I worked so hard to get an interview to become a dentist and this is what I get from a random stupid girl who doesnt even know how hard it is to become a dentist???? omg someone help me I am going insane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

ask her if she knows what DDS or DMD stands for. If she does not then there 's no need to get mad over ignorance.

Many people don't understand what it means to be a dentist. You are going to face situations similar to this as a dentist and you are going to have to find a way to respond or let it roll off your back.

Dentists:
Diagnose Disease States
Formulate Treatment Plans
Write Prescriptions
Relieve Pain
Give Patients Advice
Improve overall, physiological health of their patients.

That is what defines a doctor to me.

Call it whatever they will, many people you run into will not recognize dentists as doctors. Many of those people also are not seeking advanced degrees and so they do not understand the hard work it takes to get in and how much alike medical and dental careers are.

You mean we are not "medical" doctors....
Tell her what does she address her professors (If she goes to a college....) and ask her again what does she think it means to be a doctor.

Ignorance is bliss....

Eh, who cares. You don't need a title to validate all the hard work you've done. I'd rather be considered a dentist anyways, rather than a doctor. Dentistry is a highly specialized form of medicine and surgery 😀.

If you said you were going to become a "doctor," I would've called you out too. When you simply state "doctor," it implies physician. Just because you get the title of doctor doesn't mean that society identifies your profession as such. PHDs get called doctor, but if someone asks them what they're going into and they say "I'm gonna be a doctor," they're just being a huge tool. Not saying a dentist isn't more deserving of the title than a philosophy professor, but it's the same concept.

Also, you're annoying. Grow up.
Why are you so angry about something so irrelevant to anything? If you're in it to say "I'm a doctor," then beome a physician and stfu.

Hahaha  I agree

Well said. You'll likely encounter patients who will give you similar treatment. Crying and whining to them wont get your point across.

Wait, I am confused. Did you have 4 interviews last year but no acceptances? Or did you just not update your predents school decision, and SDN Pre-dental to Dental Student statii?

-I ask because you do not have a 2010 app cycle on your profile

Yeah I agree with most people on this thread....who seriously cares. Its true that society places the word "doctor" on medical doctors, thats just the way our society is. I would also not get into a game of who deserves the title of doctor more either, because its a stupid game! Just by the mere fact that you are allowing this to upset you so much shows that you have some major insecurities attached to becoming a dentist. If you need the title "doctor" in our society, then switch professions.

P.S. I would never tell someone Im going to be a doctor anyhow, because its common knowledge that "doctor" in our society means physician. I think your friend has the right to get upset. Be proud you are going for dentistry not defensive!

If you said, "I am going to school to become a doctor." I would assume you meant medicine. End of story. Calling yourself a doctor without following it with (of dental medicine), is really an invitation for this conversation. That is very obvious. It might be that you call it a "doctor" for other reasons. I like to say dentistry because it's specific and everyone knows exactly what I'm talking about. Except they usually assume that I am going to be a hygienist..lol

I think you should work on not being so easily offended, as it would probably equate to unhappiness in the profession of dentistry. Let's face it, not all patients will be happy to see you. Are you going to be offended by that?

Unfortunately, she's right and you're wrong. So I'd get over it. Really quickly.

Either get over it now, or come to a slow understanding during the course of dental school that you won't be able to diagnose and treat ANY medical diseases and conditions because the dental curriculum isn't clinical in the biomedical sciences. It's clinical in restorative dentistry, however.

They can call dentists Bozos for all I care. It doesn't change the profession and salary of a dentist.

Look at the brightside, the misnomer might keep dentists outside of Obamacare for longer...:xf:

She is right. In most societies eyes, doctors are well M.D.'s. But why get your panties in a bunch, its just a title.

Plus, most dentists are called dr. so and so when addressed in their respective clinical settings.

At least be thankful your not going through the pharmacist route. Alot of my friends have pharmacy doctorate under the degree, but noone in the real world addresses pharmacists as dr so and so. And boy do they hate that.

But a title is a title, so who cares- except maybe your ego, and other peoples ego. But who wants to deal with that to?

Lawyers have JD (Juris Doctor) degrees. I should start calling my lawyers Dr.

Scenario Played out:

Me: I'm going to professional school to be a doctor
Girl: Oh, what kind of doctor?
Me: Lawyer
Girl: That's not a doctor
Me: Yes it is, JD stands for Juris Doctor
Girl: Take me you handsome hunk

I guess I have overeacted... I think being a dentist is one of the best career you can have and I am very thankful that I am heading toward that routine. anyways, thanks for alot of inputs... yea i made mistake on my predents.. its supposed to be for 2010.

yea just forget about it, let the girl think what she thinks, does it really matter what your label is? A dentist is a dentist, you really shouldn't care if shes think they doctors or not(even though they are). I doubt she was meaning to put you down...

Regardless, your stats are very nice! I'm surprised you haven't gotten more interviews, i think you def. be getting some sooner or later.

From now on say that you will be an oral physician!!!

A little bit of an overreaction but I kind of get where you're coming from. I recently met this guy who was asking me what I wanted to do careerwise and I mentioned dentistry (he's premed) and he goes: "Ohhh, the easier way to become a doctor".

The irony of this thread is that while many people in this thread are correct in saying that the title "doctor" generally implies MD, I wonder if any of you could tell me what title you used to address the dentist you shadowed?

In casual conversation, I never tell anyone I'm a "doctor" because it does imply medical physician especially in this part of the country. In the office I introduce myself as "Dr. Gryffindor" especially because I have a male assistant. New patients get confused when they see him in the room first preparing the room and assume he's the doctor. Then they see me (female) introduce myself as the doctor and have to readjust their perceptions.
