"I er I am almost hoping to be in med school, I mean I work in a hospital and volunteer on top of that and take undergraduate classes that I should have taken years ago and I hope if everything goes well I may be a med student next fall that is I am trying to be a doctor, and I will be but I am not actually really on my way yet"

Just went to a wedding this weekend and had to answer that question a million times. That was a synopsis of my many answers. Just venting really.

Edit: won't it just be nice to say "I am in med school"

I feel your pain. I was a late applicant with really good numbers and experience, "glowing" recommendations, etc. but I was getting wait-listed everywhere. I got so paranoid that I must have been screwing up the interview that I went to a psychologist for some coaching, only to find out that my interview skills are fine. My friends and classmates already had multiple acceptances (this of course did not make me happy since I was waiting for people like them to choose a school and open up a seat in the class). I had a breakdown on the phone with my mom. I wondered if this was a sign that I shouldn't go into medicine. I seriously questioned my motivations.

After some soul searching, I decided I was truly dedicated to the field. I held out hope. I continued interviewing with confidence. Things worked out. If you feel that you have the credentials and that you will make a good doctor, hang in there and I am sure things will work out for you too. And it WILL feel good to finally say "I am going to med school." 🙂

The best thing to do is to practice and then launch into some giant spiel about something that no one has any interest in. I work with "Carbohydrate metabolism in fungi", or "My work is with a zoonotic disease and my interest is in DNA repair mechanism in pathogenic bacteria". People shut up pretty quick when they don't understand what you are talking about. Then at the end you say, "and I'm hoping to get into med school next year". "How's Aunt Maud and the twins?" Quick and easy one sentence statements that thoroughly confuse the majority of the people has always worked with me. Or you could say, "I'm homeless and working on my panhandling technique. I'll work for food."

play it like you are on a career break ( bumming it) and when you geti nto med school, announce it and surprise eveyone. That's what I am doing.😀

I got tired of that problem. Even moreso when I had to take a break from my studies because of family and financial problems. So now I just say, "I'm working to pay off my student loans so I can go back to school and finish my pre-med courses." Usually that's enough to satisfy the person who asked, and I don't have to stammer through three paragraphs of explanation anymore.
