I also applied for FM, IM & Path categorical.
I find it difficult to organize my CV when applying to more than one specialty. e.g. If I prefer path program, should I omit my experience in surgery or internal medicine in my CV? But we only have one copy of the CV.

Does anyone have an idea of why all my programs on eras say that my application was given to programs at 9:30 this morning when I was applying for programs from 3-4 pm or so yesterday? I think that might have really messed this up for me and im not sure what happened.

For a lot of us, the big question is ,"How many phone calls should I have received by now?" The random posts about getting a phone call don't tell us anything substantial, so I created a bunch of Google surveys. You can follow the link for the programs you are applying to, tell it if you have received calls or emails, and then see everyone's results afterward. You can also edit your response later when you get phone calls. This should let everyone see what percentage of SOAPers in their specialty are getting calls:

Sorry if this question was asked already, but for those who are going through the SOAP again, can we receive offers without interviews?

Theoretically this is possible. I have never heard of this happening in reality. What program is going to make an offer to someone they never even talked to?

Thanks! Just asking to calm my nerves. No calls yet!

Congratulations! Just wondering what you have improved to get the match this year?

Better LORs (I think I had a bad one the previous season).

My interview skills (I learned that not asking enough questions about the program might make them think I'm not that interested so I asked until the interviewer got bored haha).

Usmle step 3 which I noticed a couple of programs liked that I did it before hand.

I wasn't as keen on matching last year as I'm this year so also subconsciously I was more driven to match this year.

1 year of experience in a foreign IM turned into 2 this year.

No research. No new US electives.

It was a brutal experience since I was devastated after not matching last year (I might have been a little bit cocky about the process last year, my scores are 260+).

I'm more humble now. More experienced socially. I learned humility.

Hopefully I matched to one of my first choices come Friday but honestly I'm happy even with my last choice.

Thank you so much for the information, which helps me and others as well. Congrats again!

Has anyone received any notification/interviews/ANYTHING from any prelim IM or prelim surgery spots in the NYC area?

By not ranking you initially, they basically said, we would rather SOAP than take this guy.

I think they have already sent their message.

Probably...but you also have incidents like the UVA GS snafu mentioned earlier in this thread where half the ROL was lost. One has 45 offers - unless one has 45 better choices than this program, there's no loss in trying again. Personally, if I were a program director SOAPing, I'd like to take someone who was qualified enough to get an interview, and then determined enough and interested enough in us to reach out this week a second time.

Edit: How do I change my status? PGY-1 now

Is this a sick joke, I just got a call from weird number, it wasnt a program, it was a loan company calling about the plans they have of how I can pay off my student debt....of all days!

That is savage

Happened to me too!!!

609 area code right?

Not necessarily. Couldn't it mean that they filled the ROL of applicants they thought were more qualified than you. Since they went unmatched, If you interviewed there possibly your chances are higher than some person they never even met.

Hey guys, how soon should one send follow-up emails after a phone interview? I feel with the tight scheduling, it would be best to send a follow-up soon, before they make a decision about their ranks. But is immediately after too soon?

Hey, a few questions. Did they email you before calling you? or did they just call you out of the blue and did an interview on the spot? How long did the phone call last and could you provide a general premise of the questions they asked you? Thanks so much

I did it right away. I'm not leaving anything to chances this time around.

I just got an email saying I was on the list of people being considered for a program and then they gave a bunch of info about the program. they said if i had questions to contact this person at their email address. does that mean i should contact them now and say thank you for your consideration i am very interested etc or should i just wait for them to ask to interview me?

My boyfriend has talked to a few programs and about half emailed before, the other half just called out of the blue. Each interview he's had has lasted about 20-30 minutes. They've been asking him why he thinks he didn't match and what makes him interested in this particular field. Some have asked about his 4th year rotations, if he has ties to the area, etc. A lot of time is spent for questions and the program to sell themselves a bit. I hope that helps!

They initiated contact--respond to express interest and let them know how well you would fit into their program (read the info they sent so you can be specific).

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I hope all the best to your boyfriend during this time.

Are there any people who have a very low step 1 score and below average step 2 score, U.S citizen from a Caribbean school getting any calls? I feel like my life is over, I wish I listened to every doctor who warned me don't go into medicine but no I had to "prove" that I can do it, look where it got me waiting for a f**ckin lottery to decide my future with over 300 grand in debt... I can see now why people commit suicide

Hopefully your post wasn't meant to imply anything but please if you are being serious, please tell someone in your life who cares about you and can help you.

I understand we are not allowed to reproduce the list of un-filled programs, but are we allowed to talk to other medical school friends who have matched about which programs/locations we are interviewing at in SOAP? Thanks!

Just an updated, I finally talked to a program.

Some things I gathered. I spoke with the Chief Resident. There was a lot of background chatter, sounded like people deciding who to contact and whatnot I can only assume. So, hopefully programs are beginning to look at applicants and you guys will get some calls soon.

Some questions that were asked from me were the basic questions you get during your interviews. Tell me about yourself, why specialty X, why this particular location/do you have family in the area (the program is far from my "home"). The chief gave me an opportunity to ask questions and I had some for him. My advice, if you get an email beforehand, look up the program so that you can have a meaningful conversation when the time comes to chat.

Also, I received an email for interview at 6 PM West Coast time yesterday. I contacted the lady who emailed me about a telephone interview twice, politely, asking them to call me at their convenience. I was worried because I got cold called out of the blue at 11:40 AM West Coast Time. So don't be alarmed if they don't contact you right away.

Path Soaper as well. Independent App but graduated USMD. 4IVs. Ranked all 4. Like the other 2 path soapers in this thread, I did not match and two of my programs I interviewed at have spots open. A real gut punch after I did the math and figured out I was not ranked. Also, they know that I know but I can't contact them obviously. I have not received any contact yet.

It's been tough especially after so much interview training and mock interview sessions and positive feedback during actual interviews. Whether accurate or not, my family and I feel that I interviewed well. We have kind of a small program theory as to why you may not get ranked in small specialties like ortho, neurosurgery, path, or any specialty which typically offers 1-3 positions per program per year. Basically, a program might interview 10 per position. Big programs would rank all but psycho personality disorder people. But a small program has seen themselves get bottom ranks too often when there is only 1 or 2 spots.

Therefore they might have the strategy to only rank the top half of applicants, then if no match, you can swipe up a derm hopeful who decided on dermpath in soap, or a path applicant who is an amazing candidate, but ranked only 1 due to location like possibly the app above. Or they can go to their own DNR list and see if any of those apps didn't match and decide to make an offer based on an entire day's interaction rather than a 10 min phone call. Or I truly rubbed someone the wrong way twice and they really don't want me in their program.

I am pretty sure ortho etc uses a strategy like above because programs have the advantage in soap and the above technique gives you way more choices and likely better choices with very little increase in risk of not filling. Plus some programs that want say 3 will be okay with 2.

Path had 24 spots last year. There is more than double this year. 50% are less than 50% full. This is certainly not a typical path soap and there could be something actually fishy going on like the guy above suggests with pds incorrectly submitting rol in gs.

Good luck to the other 3 path soapers in this thread! And good luck to everyone in soap!

So it seems like different from past years, we are allowed to do max allotment of 45 all at once. In the past from what I have read, applications did not roll over to the next round. Is that still the same case as the number of apps we can apply at once is changed this year??

This is definitely the hardest thing that can ever happen. Didn't expect this to happen at all.
still 0 call. These have been the longest hours.

DO with low board scores...who am I kidding...no MD programs are going to call me today... le sigh .

What do you mean by low? Can you give us an idea and what specialty you wanted to go into? If you have a PhD, then I can only assume that will work in your benefit. Also, I know this process is extremely rough. I am going through it as well. I have 2 really, REALLY qualified classmates who also failed to match. Point being, you guys are not alone and the best thing you can do is try to lift yourself up. I was feeling really down this morning, like it finally hit me that I didn't match. Went through a flurry of emotions but then realized that other people are also in my shoes. One of my classmates even messaged me saying something really nice and that totally changed my entire day. So, try to stay positive guys and hope for the best!

Second year in a row for me. At this point i'm laughing. The way things work in today's social system is so broken. When paying thousands of dollars to get a degree is not enough to get a job that you literally sacrifice your time/life/relationships for. Meanwhile, 14 year old kids are streaming videogames on youtube and twitch making a fortune.
