from what ive been told the reason alot of people avoid the AOA match this year is because of the uncertainty that those programs would acquire accreditation and because all aoa programs end by 2020 and your still in a aoa residency during that time, you'd basically get the boot and be screwed. if this is wrong correct me but this is what ive been told
First off, the vast majority of available programs on the AOA side are FM, IM, or TRIs. All other specialties have only 5 or less programs each, so almost everyone who scrambles AOA is scrambling into an FM, IM, or TRI program.
Anyone who starts this year in a 3yr (or less) program will finish before the merger is even an issue. Plenty of programs already have initial accreditation, and many more will get it. Going to a program with initial or pre-accreditation is actually way better than going for a program that has neither (actually any longer programs that don't have those are already barred from accepting more residents by the AOA). And almost everyone who's scrambling will finish (barring delays) before it becomes an issue.
The AOA also requires programs to file an exit plan if they aren't accredited by Sept of 2019. The exit plan is designed to protect residents stuck in the program and transition them to another so they don't just get the boot with no other options. Who knows what will happen with that?
We're also talking about having a residency position at all or not for those SOAPing/scrambling. This isn't about what's ideal, its about what's possible. But like I said, almost everyone scrambling AOA are going into FM, IM, or a TRI.
So for the scramble, ERAS is still in effect?...
I honestly have no idea. How would you get LORs? I thought you could still submit apps to DO programs through ERAS, but maybe that's not true.
...I was under the assumption that it's free for all just throwing all your applications at every program via email.
I'm in an actual dilemma now. Location is big for me. I see like 10 unfilled FM DO spots in my immediate vicinity. If I get offered an FM spot on the other side of the country through SOAP, I'd be tempted to wait and shoot for one of the DO ones on Friday.
Never experienced anything like this. Thoughts??
Yeah, there's no guarantee that those positions in the AOA are still available. The programs don't seem to be updating things on the NMS post-match database.
If you're really interested, you could ask a friend to contact those programs and just ask if they're still open, but even then, who says they'll be available when you finish the SOAP or whether they'd even offer you a spot?
It seems like a really bad move to turn down an offer for a hope for something better. You're already in the SOAP. Like others have said, secure and spot if you can, and be happy.
Anyone think it's worth applying to the more competitive specialties with openings? Seems like the best choice for me is to turn the page and lock in to a new specialty rather than looking for a 1 year gig followed by round 2 for EM.
I mean, if you like those specialties. But if that was the case, why didn't you apply to them in the first place? Don't just apply because its competitive and available. Apply because you would be happy doing it.
