For the soap carving section of the Canadian DAT, we can use either a pencil or a sharpie. Sharpie is not as accurate as pencil mark b/c the lines drawn are thick. However, if I use pencils, a mark is formed, resulting in an unsmooth piece of soap. Is it not possible to draw on the soap with a pencil without leaving an unremovable mark on it (which they will take off marks)?

i would recommend sticking to using the sharpie. thats what they give u during the test. for practice, the marker might not work anymore after a few tries, so use a wet paper towel to clean the tip. I didn't have too many problems with the marker. After practicing a lot with a crappy marker, the real carving should be no problem with a brand new marker.

if the pencil marks up the soap, then im not sure how they'll deduct marks from your soap. i wouldn't take that risk.

if you leave scratches on the soap using a pencil, it won't affect your g.rade

pencil is way better than a marker. i guess it's all personal preference but I found using a pencil to be more accurate.

in the end, it's all about practice.

if you carve around 40 soaps, you'll definitely rock the carving section
