Just wondering as to what you think are the best programs in the southeast. I would prefer to be in northern Va, NC, Atlanta, or Florida.

I understand that 'best program' is also applicant dependent based on many factors. However, based solely on the academic strength/complexity of cases/post grad job outlook what do you think are top tier? Obviously I know programs like Hopkins, Duke, and Emory are all up there but what about others(Georgetown, gw, umd, mayo clinic Jacksonville fl, Miami)? I'm interested in CT and CC and would prefer to train in the southeast at a solid program (and def not one known for being malignant)?

Thanks for your insight, it is greatly appreciated.

I trained at MUSC in Charleston SC-- solid program getting stronger all the time (added Frank McGowan this past year). Not malignant but thorough education. City is amazing. I'd put it on your list, at least.

Definitely consider UVA. Charlottesville is a great little city and the program is strong.

Go to Duke or Vandy

Just my opinion, but I have heard great things about the following programs in the southeast: Duke, Wake Forest, UAB, UVA, and Vandy. I think those would probably be what I'd consider the top 5 in the southeast, though I don't know much about Emory.

Personally, I'll plug Wake Forest as it tends to be somewhat of a hidden gem for some not in the know. Solid program. New PD is awesome and going to only make what is already a great (top 15-20 program) even better. Great exposure, solid teaching, match well for fellowship. Only draw back would be Winston-Salem if you are single, though I still think its okay even then. Winston-Salem is very comparable to Birmingham or Raleigh-Durham.

You can't go wrong with Gainesville for top notch training either. So many good places. Pick a place with the people you like.

👍👍👍
The BEST!!!

University of Miami will make you into a man (or a woMAN). I seriously doubt that any other program will throw you into the fire and let you burn like UM. Very little hand holding. I am currently at the Brigham in Boston and I can tell you that UM graduates stronger anesthesiologists. The Brigham graduates are much smarter (by selection) and much nicer (by selection) and they have a much more enjoyable/tolerable three years, but there is something to be said for a trial by fire. If I could go back in time, I still think I would rather train at University of Miami than at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Its a big, nasty, tough world out there in private practice medicine and you should be prepared for it.

Not sure if I would consider DC/baltimore to be in the southeast. I think UFlorida should be high in the list.

Thanks for the input guys. Would you say that the Mayo Anesthesia program @ Jacksonville, Fl stills holds the same reputation/prestige that the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN does? Any thoughts on Georgetown?

No, i've heard people use Mayo-Jax as an example of a crappy program. A lot of people don't hold the DC programs in very high regard

Kentucky is great. Every student I've ever met that has interviewed there has loved it, myself included.
