How many gallons of pure orange pulp must be added to 30 gallons of a 20% solution of orange pulp to make it a 50% solution?

The first thing I would do is realize that their is 6 gallons of pulp to start with as 20% of 30 is 6. Then set up this formula 6+x=(30+x)/2 and solve. X=amount of pulp you need to add to get a 50% mixture. Solving this formula I got 18 gallons are needed to make a 50% mixture.

WOW that was a tough one!!!! but i got it Damn MPH keeps throwing me off.

First lets define X as the miles you need to travel in 1 hour for the next 10miles to reach the average 30MPH.

40 MPH = (1 hour/40 miles)

10 miles (1 hour/40 miles) + 10 miles (1 hour/ X ) = 20 miles (1 hour/30 miles)

x = 24 MPH.

Use the formula [Time=distance/rate]. Find the time first 10miles/40mph = 1/4hour,
next find the total time [20miles/30mph=2/3hr] substract 2/3hr-1/4hr = 5/12hr,
now you can find the rate for the second 10miles. [rate=distance/time]=[10miles / 5/12hr =
24mph]

or you could do it the stupid way which is. Take the average speed of 30 times by 2 get 60.
So now we have 60 subtract 40 you get 20 close enough to 24.
