I've been told that the medical insurance offered through SOMA is better than what my school offers. It's definitely cheaper.

Does anyone know what the restrictions are on physicians we can see with this plan? Is it like an HMO or PPO that uses a preferred provider list? I am just wondering if I can keep seeing my current doc.

It says the group policy for SOMA is underwritten by Guarantee Trust Life Insurance--so I assume if my dr. takes this insurance I will be covered, and if not I have to switch to someone who does. Is this a reputable company? Anyone know?

Any feedback about this plan from people who have used it would be helpful.

Thanks.

Linda

Any doctor can take this insurance. It is a regular indemnity policy, not managed care.

I've had no problems with the policy. If you have any specific quesions, feel free to PM me.

(I'm assuming the policy would just be for you. If you have kids to cover, there are some issues)

The only thing I didn't care for with SOMA was that they don't cover birth control pills. Other than that, I've had excellent dealings with them. Very easy to work with.

SOMA insurance sucks. There are little loopholes here and there that you eventually stumble across the hard way... like the annual cap on rx... leaving me S.O.L. on meds for months! Medicine is so expensive, it doesn't take but a couple months to blow through to the limit... I was (WAS being the operative word) on Lipitor there till it ran out so am without now... damn them, as my arteries clog...

And yes, my friends with kids have had nothing but hell with SOMA.

Yep, I knew about the drug issue. Thing is, any better insurance will cost quite a bit more in most areas.

You definitely need to read the coverage description carefully and call them if you have questions. As long as you know what you're getting into, it really is decent insurance.

D-Mom, could you elaborate on the issues? I'm looking for a family plan - me, wife, baby. Thanks!

Here's what I remember: They don't cover regular checkups for kids. They do cover sick care, though. I'd recommend calling them to double check this, though.

That in mind, sick care coverage is better than no coverage...especially since most med schools allow the families of their students to go to the school's clinics for little or no charge. Chances are all those well baby checks will be covered one way or another.

Okay - thanks, D-Mom.
