Hi there!

Sorry if this is sort of a common question, but I'd really appreciate some general SDN wisdom. I have done biomedical research during the school year, while also doing some volunteering and tutoring. Last summer, I took classes, so this summer, I was hoping to round out my pre-med application by adding some clinical experience (that's more valuable than just volunteering) and hopefully shadowing physicians. Honestly, I've looked and looked and I only keep finding research universities and biomedical stuff, but not much that would be considered clinical experience or allow for a lot of shadowing. Any popular options? any ideas?

Thanks for anything!

Clinical experiences can be done at hospitals, hospice centers, long term skilled nursing facilities, camps for medically fragile kids, clinics like planned parenthood etc. You also need non clinical volunteering. This means service to the unserved/underserved in your community. You should step outside your comfort zone. Look at homeless shelters, soup kitchens Habitat for Humanity , tutoring underprivileged kids, coach a sports team of underprivileged kids. This service is just as important as your clinical experience( even though you seem to think it’s not.). Shadowing is very passive while clinical experience is active interaction with patients. You need about 50 hours of shadowing(including some with a primary care doc) and at least 150 hours of clinical experience and 150 hours of non clinical volunteering.
