Hey guys, am a British trained Doctor newly graduated from med school in the UK.
I'm quite set on coming to the US to complete a residency. Was initially looking at anesthesiology + critical care. But am now thinking of IM +ID (+ possibly critical care).
I'm ideally looking to work over there after residency fellowship but have some questions about the Visas; I understand that the J1 doesn't allow you to work and you must return to home country after completing residency plus fellowships.
Whereas the H1b visa allows you to moonlight and apply for a green card. But I've found out that many fellowship programs do not sponsor H1b visas. Do you know is this mostly the case or if you already have a sponspored H1b visa from the residency if they are ever willing to just transfer it, generally?
I don't really know what the best approach would be; to apply for a J1 complete residency + fellowship then return to Britain for 2 years. And possibly struggle on the resident salary and the reapply to US.
Or to apply for H1b visa, then try to obtain greencard to work as hospitalist for 3 years; then apply to fellowships. This option is interesting; as would allow me to earn a bit more and gain more general medical experience before specialising; but is it common for people to take time out between fellowship and residency? And also would it disadvantage an application?
Ideally I would prefer to not having to have take 3 years before residency and fellowship;
