I applied to D schools first time this year and have received 1 interview and 4 rejections (no interview) fro applying to 20 schools

I didn't really do my research that thoroughly and applied to a lot of places as an OOS applicant wasn't going to get much attention.

My GPA: 3.4 science. 3.5 overall. the calculated gpa for nonscience on AADSAS is 3.83, not sure if that helps since they were electives not related to science. I also have a 4.0 minor in psychology.

I took my DAT after submitting my application in mid july and scored 19AA/19TS however in PAT I got a 13

I had no idea what PAT was and was using my friends old MCAT books/videos to study for the DAT and so I did terribly. After researching how to study and I stumbled upon this site, I have been practicing PAT and have been getting 21-22 consistently through CDP/DATBootCamp as well as improving my other subjects. Because I took the DAT in mid July I didn't realize I was going to have to retake it until a few schools contacted me and told me that I needed to. By then it was already October/November and I am scheduled to take it in Jan.

My LORs are great, I have enough shadowing hours, and strong extracurriculars from gaining a leadership position in a student run organization in college, medical mission trips, and have hands on research experience as well in both the biotech industry (paid) as well as at my UG(unpaid). I have extensive work experience as well since I have been working ever since I was 16.

I was able to get 1 interview. 4 rejections so far and have not heard anything else from any of the other schools. I understand the major red flag of my application is my DAT scores in PAT as I had no idea what it was I didn't take the time to understand what TFE, Keyhole, Orthogamic Projections meant. But other sections of cube counting, angle ranking, and hole punch were self explanitory at the time when I took the test so learning how to get better at the PAT I have significantly improved.

I have a day job unrelated to the dental profession but I work with a lot of kids from different backgrounds in a school setting and all sorts of grades. I won't be able to afford to spend money on SMPs/post bacs and I'm not sure if it is completely necessary.

My question is, provided I retake my DAT in January and improve significantly in the PAT department, are there any interviews left in February/March or would the cycle be done by then? I have already looked at each school and some DAT priority deadlines have passed, but there are a few in which their priority is February. If I reapply next year, should I be doing anything else to make my overall application better?

First of all, there are still interviews to be offered after December until almost mid May so you might be able to get couple of interviews based on the majority of your stats. I am sure that you have recognized that your PAT score was bad, frankly horrible compare to other qualified applicants; and that is one of the factors dragging you down for this applying cycle. You did not provide about your extracurricular activities along with dental experiences in offices and with a dentist so I assume that it is descent enough.

If you are not getting accepted this cycle unfortunately, then make next year a very productive year. Do a post-baccalaureate for a year taking higher level courses or even do a master program and volunteer more in one or multiple dental offices. Make more connections locally with your dentists and dental schools nearby.

About the PAT part, a lot of people struggle with it. I was fortunate enough to find it quite easy, it comes natural for me. So I can't help you much on that department. But ask others and study hard and practice endlessly. Good luck.

My extracurriculars consisted of 3 years of lab/research work in biotech and in the academic setting. I have consistently spent shadow/volunteer hours with a dentist and did some hands on dental assisting as well. Enough to know the ins and outs of all the main procedures done in a general practice setting.

About the postbacs/masters programs, though I have considered it, I'm not sure if it is my only option right now. I'm not sure how I would be able to afford it and I feel that masters/post bacs are for people who have <3.0 GPA? Or is that not true...

The PAT I have significantly improved, I have been consistently testing myself and have gotten 21-22, my worst section is actually angle ranking while I do perfectly in TFE/Orthog/Cube Counting, a little bit of areas in improvement for keyhole and hole punch. Angle ranking, I sometimes miss 2/3 of the questions.

What can I do other than a postbac/masters/smp program to improve my application?

You really just need to redo the DAT and cross your fingers for an acceptance but plan to reapply with a stronger PAT score. I would not do a masters/postbacc if I were you.

The only thing I would consider in addition to DAT retake would be 1 or 2 high level science courses to stay sharp and show you are active academically.

Thanks. Yes, I need to retake the DAT. I am willing to reapply next year but in order for me to have the money for next years applications, I will have to keep working and not pursue a masters/postbac program. I don't think there are personal loans anymore and I'm not willing to use credit cards to pay for my apps.

Just took it

How did I do?

My pat was 13 before and I still managed to get some interviews and my AA/TS before was 19

Now it is 21/21 and 21 for pat as well
Chance me someone

I would call up the schools that haven't rejected you and let them know you retook the DAT and make sure they get your scores.

Great idea! I will do that after my interview with asdoh thanks!

Great improvement dude! Nice work!

Thanks I'm just hoping it's not too late. I didn't study at all the first time and wanted to apply as soon as the app open so that I would be early but with scores early might not have been a good idea but I still got 3 interviews from it

Scan in and email an unofficial score report NOW to the schools that haven't rejected you. Don't wait until after doing any other interviews. Time is of the essence here.

Thanks that was such good advice i actually got an interview invite during my interview due to updated scores

Congrats! Are you going to the other interview or just sticking with ASDOH? 🙂

I am going to the other interview as well initially in the very beginning of this process this upcoming interview was my first choice but so many things have changed I'm not sure if I feel that way anymore I need to find out

I would go, too! Especially if it was initially your first choice. It's always good to have options. 🙂
