Hey guys, what are some good ECs that you have down? I was thinking about it, I actually really don't have anything other than undergrad research. Is there something I can do before applying for class of 09?

Find a local dental clinic to volunteer at, you'll get dental experience and volunteer hours. If you're in SoCal, look up "Share Our Selves" in Costa Mesa. Thanksgiving and Christmas are coming up and there are plenty of opportunities to reach out to the underserved.

I don't know the best way to search for or find out more about these, but there are always dental volunteer groups who do 'missions' or trips to underserved areas or rural areas, mexico, or other countries. Personally I think this is one of the best things you can do because you'll get volunteer experience in the dental field. I have heard of trips/ programs such as "the norcal project" "the flying samaritans" "Thousand smiles" etc.

You might try the state dental board. They might know some programs.

In Texas, we have dental missions called TMOM - Texas Mission of Mercy - where dentists, dental students and pre-dents volunteer their time to help underpriviledged a few times per year.

I did that one a couple of years back. Awesome experience. 🙂

Funny that you guys mentioned TMOM, I just left from a Houston TMOM 😀 an hour ago!! Definitely a good experience.....😛

-volunteering to help with gr12 provincial exam (~SAT) reviews
-spoke at seminars, talking to incoming high school students about the transition to university life
-a job at a special needs kid daycamp led to a volunteer position for a fri night special needs youth program. (volunteering at a daycamp is something i highly recommend - you get to be outside in the sun and have waterfights/play sports during the summer ....and go swimming/to waterslides/park/beach/zoo/pool for free!

aww that sucks..you're a dental student that got stuck in sterilization?!?!
FYI there should be a few more TMOM's taking place here in the near future. I believe one in feb and one sometime during the spring..

For dental volunteering specifically, my suggestion would be to look for a not for profit clinic, or public health clinic. There are advantages to one over the other, but both are great volunteer experiences.

In my experience, the advantage at a not for profit clinic, is that many are younger dentists serving their few years to pay back their grant money. They are more willing to slow down to teach you what is going on, and explain the subtleties of procedures, and the nature of community health work. In a city run public health clinic, the patient load is overwhelming, and you'll need to pack your running shoes. It'll give you an idea of the pace of a high volume dental office, and really let you know if it is for you. The dentist here was too busy to explain or talk much, and it was really about taking initiative to help out.

My advice would also be to get looking ASAP, because even though you're volunteering, it takes some time for them to verify your immunization records, references, and to match you up with a dentist that might have time for you.

You could try volunteering at a food bank, homeless shelter, daycare, any non-profit organization. Try getting in touch with some of the volunteer fraternities or organizations on campus. I'm sure they'd have tons of opportunities for you that are more local.

Also Google "your town" + "free dental clinic" and other variations, this should give you some leads.

there are actually many ECs you can do.
These are what I am doing/consider doign next year.
1. work as an intern at dental ceramics lab (for free)
2. research at school
3. intern at biotech company (invisalign, if engineering)
4. shadow a dentist
5. volunteer at a hospital
6. teach kids

Hey thanks guys

I googled "volutuneer" haha and got some good results, thanks for the info!!!
