Coming from a Chinese family.
I have so much pressure, I'm sure those that are Indian can understand what its like to be pressured and pushed.
I am currently a 3rd year at undergrad, biology major.
C's in bio, a D in orgo 1, c in orgo 2, D in bio stat, gpa currently stands at 2.66 with a science gpa of maybe 2.70xish.
I noticed my failure and freaked out last semester fall 07 and started to push harder and got a physiology grade of B-. Currently i am taking immunology and still pushing.
But at the same time i feel like in the long run i wont get accepted to anything.
So thats why I'm here:
If i want to be in Ross at Fall 09. When do i apply, when do i take Mcat? And what are my chances and what advices etc can this community give me.

If your going to flame me or spit down on me, which im sure you will, then please refrain from doing so.

Thanks

You would need to go to MERP unless your MCAT is above a 27. MERP might be the best thing for you because your GPA goes down in med school, not up.

Are you sure you are Chinese?😀 joking.

You should retake some class and take some nutrition class, which is easy.

Now those grades sound like mine! Im currently doing a post bacc to bring up my grades, you may want to look into that. Your saving grace will be your MCAT, as long as you get an above average score (30+, Im guessing).

You should take your MCAT in April 09, and you can apply in May. If you really want to get ahead, take your MCAT Jan 09 and apply some time in Feb.

You need to get it up to 2.8 area, are you sure this is for you? You know not everyone is meant to be a Doctor, some of us do better at other things in life.

If you are struggling at this then you will have great trouble in Medical school it is a lot harder.

no offense but not everyone can do this.

You really need to do some soul searching and see if medicine will make you happy and you need to be confident that you will make a good doctor. You should not feel any pressure from you parents. Instead do what is best for you.

If you had a real passion for medicine, I would encourage you to do stuff like study hard for the MCAT and do a post-bacc program to improve your science grades. But my impression, from what you've posted here, is that you are going into medicine because of family pressure. Are you really sure you want to go into medicine? Assuming you get into med school, that's just the beginning of a long, tough road. In the first place, your classes in med school are basically all science-based, and there is a much larger volume of information that has to be learned, and within a shorter time period, than there was in undergrad. In your third and fourth years, you not only have to still learn a large amount of medical information, but you also have to deal with things like long hours (especially call nights), being treated like %hit by attendings and residents alike, endless paperwork, fatigue, etc... And what you deal with in third and fourth year will be magnified a thousandfold when you become a resident. Once you become an attending, there will still be plenty of long hours and paperwork. Oh, and when you become an attending, there's also fun stuff like malpractice litigation and dealing with insurance companies.
You see, most people who go into medicine have a certain passion for it that keeps them slogging through all of the crap that gets thrown at them. If you really know, in your heart of hearts, that you want to become a doctor, then kick a$$ on the MCAT, do a post-bacc program to boost your credentials and also prove that you can handle science coursework, apply at least twice to US schools, and then, failing that, apply to the Caribbean. If you're only trying to get into med school because your parents want you to be a doctor, then, judging from the grades you mentioned above, you really need to find a different career.

If you really wana be a doc and thats what you really love, and have got a bachelors degree with low stats, get a post bach degree with good grades. Lets face it, you will be getting more loans to pay for post bach, but good grades will be the benefit from it other wise its just a big waste of time/money.

Now the MCAT do well in it, take a MCAT review course by Kaplan, Princeton review etc.,

Good Luck to yaa

Thanks for the input Top Gun.
And yes I do have a passion for medicine, it's just that I've hard horrible relationships in my life, constant strept throat infections and my parents got seperated along with a newborn which i had to take care of. It pretty much ruined my gpa. Should I write about this in my personal statement or tell ADCOMS during an interview?

I do plan on taking my mcats, im aiming for a 35+ to outweigh my GPA.
I have about 300+hrs of Emergency Room Volunteer Experience, about 100hrs+ as a Pharmacy Tech. I also have a LOR's and one from an Alumni-ADCOM in a medical school i plan on applying, and hopefully i'll be shadowing in the next 2 weeks.

Question: I was told to apply by end of June for Sept 09 Medical School Enrollment, Would it be too late for Sept 09 Enrollment if I apply end of summer?
I'm taking a lot of heavy courses (basically biology electives, immunology etc) hopefully i can bring my GPA up to 3.0 if thats the case will adcom's look at it, or judge me on my first 2 years?

MCAT never "outweighs" a GPA that is a premed and Adviser myth.

these schools and you need 3 months to get the needed paper work through, if you apply AUG then you will not go until Jan.

Some people are taking time out from their busy med student schedule to help other people, now thats what life is all about. They will be excellent docs one day. Great job indeed!!!!

I thought Chinese people were smart😀kidding.

FYI: I applied for Sept in April. The class was full and I was rolled to January. Apply earlier.

You do not have to major in science to get into medical school. I know people from a lot of different backgrounds who went to medical school. I had an RA who was an Anthropology major, he went to Johns Hopkins, probably the best medical school in the world. In retrospect I wish I studied Anthropology instead.
I feel you about the Asian thing, a lot of Asians got to prove themselves constantly to feel accepted, going above and beyond.

You could get into some Caribbean and other offshore schools, US schools would be out of the question, if your GPA was at least a 3.1-3.3, maybe some DO programs. Also note that a lot of offshore schools have higher rates of attrition than those in the US and Canada, in most North American schools its unheard of for people to fail out, even low tier DO schools have no more than 1 percent attrition, many foreign schools have higher attrition rates that vary considerably. Schools in the UK and Europe have some of the highest dropout rates, I was surprised that in the UK as many as 40 percent drop out of school, and UK schools have high admission standards, especially the ones that take North Americans. Probably more British students leave by choice as medicine does not have the same prestige that it has in the USA.
