Hi guys,

I'm currently a senior at UC Davis. I'm pretty much done with my major courses and am wondering if I could retake a pre-req class at UCD that I received a C- in? I know the UC policy doesn't allow students to retake a class with a C-, but I saw some people in this forum were able to retake it. If I could register for the course, would the course count as units for financial aid ( I need minimum 13 units to get fin aid) and how would the grade appear on my transcript? I'm afraid if the Registrar finds out I retake the course against the UC policy, they may remove the newest grade.
If not, can I retake the course at a CC or a state university like SJSU after graduating in Davis? How is the financial aid given for someone with a B.S degree when applying to those schools?

I know my questions are lengthy, but I'd appreciate your help. Thanks in advance.

Blargh! that is a very school specific question! At my school you could "repeat/delete" a score that was a C- or lower, because many professional and graduate programs won't honor it. I would not retake it at UC Davis, b/c the enrollment system at your school will not let you sign up for it. it would require an override, which ultimately requires permission from the registrar and department.
I dont see why you couldnt take the course somewhere else, but UC Davis WILL NOT honor that credit. Go the CC route, its cheaper, and having a BS shouldnt make a difference for FA (actually all your current loans will go into forbearance- yay!)
Keep in mind, pharmacy schools see both grades for that one course, and both will be factored into your cumulative and math & science GPA. And yes, ppl have been accepted with a C- in one course before, but they had other things to compensate for it, like a wicked PCAT score, or a stellar GPA except for that one course.

I was from a UC and we were allowed to retake classes with a C- or lower. At our school, the original grade still appears on your transcript but doesn't get calculated into the GPA. The new grade will be calculated in your GPA. (PharmCAS averages the 2 grades). You can't retake a C or above, but you can retake a C- or below.

The course units should count towards your units and as long as you are a full time student, you should receive your financial aid at UC Davis. If you are planning on retaking a class at a CC after receiving your degree, you will not receive any type of grants (ex. Cal grants) but you may receive some loans. You will have to apply for FAFSA in that case.

Hey! I attended UC Riverside and was allowed to re-take the first quarter of general chemistry lab over because I received a C-(I took it during the very quarter of college and the transition from high school was a little rough for me). Talk to your advisor about your situation, and I'm sure they will accomodate you. When I took it over, I got an A+ but the new grade doesn't affect your UC GPA and you don't get units for it(but the letter grade will show on your UC transcript). But the new grade will affect your PharmCAS gpa which is important when applying for pharmacy schools. Hope this helps 🙂

I would definitely redo it at Davis if possible, especially if it's an upper division class. I got a C- in biochem there and had to retake at Berkeley for way too much money, since CCs around here don't offer upper division classes.
