If you are a Dental Student, I was wondering if there is anything you did not know or wish you knew about your school before you started? You do not have to mention your school, I am just curious. Things can range from academics, being in the clinic, etc

If you are a Dental Student, I was wondering if there is anything you did not know or wish you knew about your school before you started? You do not have to mention your school, I am just curious. Things can range from academics, being in the clinic, etc

1) Don't buy all the books
2) buy more than 2 sets of scrubs
3) scrubs do not shield against cold wind
4) The books you need can be found illegally online (<- not that I am condoning that sort of behavior)
5) No matter what you try and learn before dental school, it is wrong, always
6) You will suck with a handpiece the first time you use it - not even able to make a 1 mm deep by 4 mm long plus sign accurately. But this will change after spending countless hours in the bench lab practicing preps that you only do your first year then in clinic 3 years later.
7) There are some people who will only study the night before the test and get a better score than you no matter how many grueling hours you have already put in.
8) the way you studied in high school/college is in no way the way you will study in d-school
9) your professors hate you and make their accents 10x worse just to torment you.
10) Your liver will be cirrhotic by second semester D1 because you have developed a pattern of behavior of needing a drink after each ppt slide you look at just to, "relax you so you can focus better" . . . alcoholics

yeah... didn't see the specifics about 'your school.' Good advice nonetheless.

Mainly, here at IUSD anyways, we pay someone (who happens to be me and my wifey) to transcribe, word for word, the lectures and put those words onto the slide they are talking about. So, now in Dschool, I study by reading the verbatims and studying the slides. Also, I used to never study in groups, but now, there is so much information, that I cannot seem to, personally, get the best grip on them so it helps to have someone explain it while I can explain other things. Lastly, you are overwhelmed with information, so it is more about studying smart than memorizing everything slide for slide (like looking at old, open exams and learning how the professor asks questions and if he/she repeats, etc.).

It took about one huge exam (we take comprehensive exams every 2 weeks in our first year, like a 5 hour test over everything the past two weeks, sucks but prepares you for boards) to realize how much studying you have to do and how different it has to be. Not saying I did poorly, because I didnt.
