This website is very informative and all your posts have been good. I have some questions...

1) First of all I want to know what you guys think of my current situation. I have been a CNA in a nursing home for 1 year and have been doing research for a year and a half. I have been to Jamaica 3 times for Volunteer trips through world relief and volunteer at the hospital (in Childrens)... and various other EC's. Do you guys have any other suggestions of what I could get involved in?

Another question, If i have the opportunity to take a first year medical school class (Biochem at UW Madison) would you reccomend that I take that or wait?

Do you know if these credits transfer easily to other Medical schools?

As far as letter of recs go, what do you think is the limit to send to a school. The More the better or no. (I have about 6 right now, should I narrow it down?)

Thank You for your advice everyone, I appreciate it.

gah, I'm not applying yet, but gah!!! I dont think you need to worry in the extracurricular department.

One more question. For those of you that applied to MCW. What did you think?

mb,

your extracurrics are fine. it is not quantity, but quality. adcoms can recognize someone who just does things to enhance their application. the fact that you have gone to jamaica three times suggests that there is some personal involvement there, or that you have been moved enough to go there again and again. they like that.

as far as biochem at a medical school. take it if you feel like you want to. some medical schools except credits, but i'm not sure which ones. i do know that you can test out of classes like biochem at some medical schools, so you may want to think about taking biochem now and trying to test out of it later.

i don't know much about the school you are asking about. i only applied to CA,NY,NJ.

i wish you the best of luck.. oh, your jobs in the health care field will only help you in the process. you'll have lots of things to talk about at interviews and that is very important.

mbkatz - I just sent you a PM (private message)

I think that the most important part about your EC's is that you can talk about them in an interesting and relevant way when it comes to the interview. So having more won't necessarily help you, past what will make for good conversation.

For the letters... I was always told between 3 and 5. Any more than that is excessive, and maybe even annoying. Try to stick with the ones that are the best, but I really wound try to stay under 5.

I have 6 recommendations, but they are clipped behind my premed board's recommendation, which summarizes the others. I had to have a lot because I am a double non-science major, and I needed 2 from science profs, 1 from each major, and then I had 2 from an internship (different supervisors)
