Ok, I'm trying to get into SIU but I am an out of state resident. My residency is in TN, and I just graduated from Wash U in St. Louis. I graduated with a 3.37 total and 3.08 science GPA. My dat scores are good: 22 AA, 22 PAT, 22 TS. I'm sure some of you will suggest I just apply to U of Tennessee. I have applied there also, but would like to go to SIU over UT. I know SIU primarily takes in-state students for there ~50 student entering class. What I'd like to know is if I have a chance as an out of state student? Anyone out there who has been accepted as an out of state? What were your scores? Thanks

look up residency requirements. maybe there is some loophole, like purchasing property.

Wouldn't it be too late for that since I've already applied?

curious..
why siu over UT-memphis?
(i'm guessing b/c their clinic is in east st. louis..)
anyways, both are excellent schools.

for what it's worth...
..i applied as an out-of-stater and was accepted to SIU 4 years ago.
..at least at that time...no interiew was required....i don't exactly have much more current info. if i remember correctly they were attracted to standout dat marks.
so..i think you'll get a look.
however, dental admissions in general is more competitive these days than even a few years ago..
so.... who knows.

btw,
u can apply to UT separately..
(use perm tennessee address to apply to UT....and the local st. louis address to apply to the AADSAS schools)

Well, the main reason I'm going for SIU is that my girlfriend is in grad school at Wash U right now and for both of our sakes I'd rather not try to have a long distance relationship while in dental school.
I know both are great schools and I'd get a great education from both schools, but another reason I like SIU is that UT is near downtown memphis and the "campus" consists of a building. SIU actually has a campus feel to it. I know thats just a nit-picky detail. But I don't know if I want to spend 4 years at a place where all the trees I see are growing out of the sidewalk and not from dirt.

Also, how would applying to SIU with my St. Louis address help?

all things being equal...u have a great shot at ut-mem being from tenn.
i don't think using a st. louis as opposed to a TN address would hurt.

your motivation for applying would be clearer.
..u would not just be another out of stater applying to all 54 schools...or just applying because they may not interview...

also, this is just an example..
but northern kentucky university considers kids from cincinnati, ohio...in-state.

imo, u want your dental clinic in an urban area with easy access for patients...

have u seen where you'll see your patients at SIU?
iirc, it is in east st. louis...not alton.

i agree with u about UT-Mem
the library and clinic looked and smelled a little too much like the 70s...and being the health profession campus for tennessee...u would miss out on the campus atmosphere..

Thanks toothcaries, I see your point about using the address. When I filled out the AADSAS online I put my present address as my St. Louis one and my perminant one as TN. I know what you are talking about with your Kentucky University example, but there is already a dental school in MO (UMKC), so SIU would only give preference to Illinois residents. But it couldn't hurt.

By the way, I just called the admissions office and asked how many out of state students they accept, and the lady told me that they might accept 1-2 out of state students if the applicant pool from IL is not strong.
So that doesn't sound like the best thing. Hmm.
