Do premeds ever minor in anything. I was thinking a biology major and a psychology minor. but am i wasting time doing a psych minor or is this relatively common? I really like psych but like bio more (which is why it is my major). Just curious. if you are premed, do you have a minor?

Minors (or even double majors for that matter) are a waste of time if you are doing it "just to minor." If you are actually interested in the subject to the extent that you'd want to take enough classes to qualify for a minor, then go for it. Otherwise, don't bother...your time will be better spent on ECs.

Agreed. I don't think anyone would be impressed with a minor from an academics perspective. Only do it if its a subject you actually enjoy studying.

I don't know if its beneficial or not, but for what its worth, I double majored in Psychology (BS in behavioral/neurological), Spanish (BA) and Abnormal Child Psychology (BA) with a minor in Human Development. I only did it because I love those subjects- it would have been way too much uneccessary work otherwise. Since I enjoyed them, though, I feel like they really enriched my undergraduate experience.

If you need to formally declare a minor to have registration priority for those classes you'd enjoy, then by all means declare it. But med school adcomms won't care about it.

You should absolutely study what you want to study because it's the last real chance you'll get. So many people (including me) do the biology or some variation major, often because that's what they think needs to be done. If I could do it all over again I would have taken a lot more classes, maybe a minor or double major, in another field that I was interested in. Of course, make sure your grades don't suffer! But it does look interesting to interviewers and ADCOMs if you have something a little different from the "typical" pre-med major

I double majored in biology and Spanish. I completed it in the typical four years. I did it half because I enjoy Spanish and half to pad my application.
