I know this is an old movie but I am just now watching it. I encourage all of you to watch it. This movie made me feel inspired and pissed off at the same time..LOL...We need something to pass the time as we wait to hear back from schools right?? So watch the movie...LOL...you can watch it for free on youtube..although I have to warn u like the 10th part doesn't have sound so you have to read the subtitles.

That's the one with Mos Def playing the lead, right? If so, I remember it and loved it! Very inspirational!!! Yes, it also angers me, but that's what Blacks had to fight against decades ago. It makes any type of oppression we might face now seem rather trivial, imo. Which then makes me feel weak for ever complaining and for not just sucking it up and pushing through my circumstances. But yes, great suggestion! I might just rent it though...I hate watching things in chopped up parts :/

One of my favorite movies of all time!

Vivian Thomas' grandson was the first African-American cardiovascular fellow at Hopkins (1990s). Vivian Thomas (the subject of the film) died in 1984 which wasn't that long ago. When I go to the American College of Surgeon's meeting, there still are not that many Black surgeons in attendance. There are even fewer black cardiothoracic surgeons and I know just about all of the black vascular surgeons. There is much to do and black males are very scarce in medical schools these days.

Don't worry NJBMD, rest assured there will soon be one more black cardiothoracic surgeon to add to your list. 😀

I have a classmate who is finishing fellowship at Boston U that will be there too. He should be done this year.

At some point I'd like to read the book...I'm sure it will be even more intersting to "hear" from Thomas himself. Interestingly the latest edition of Moss & Adams (one of the pediatric cardiology bibles) uses the term "Blalock-Thomas-Taussig" shunt. I don't know if it will ever catch on and replaced the more common Blalock-Taussig eponym, but one could hope that Thomas could at least get a little more credit in common (congenital heart disease) parlance.

haha, well I've got a good 12 years to go and about 60 more tests but I'll get there.

Great movie! Thanks for recommendating it. I just finished watching it in a million different parts on youtube lol. Oh yea, it's the 11th part that has no sound, not the 10th. 😉 The movie is very inspirational indeed 👍

Something the Lord Made is my all time favorite movie and Vivian Thomas is my personal hero. I know there is only a handful of female pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons and I hope to be one as well. I have shadowed the son in law of of fellow colleague of Thomas and I consistently state Thomas should've been given more credit. I call the shunt "Blalock-Thomas-Taussig" shunt with pride. Thanks for the link to the book, I will order it!

I just watched it last night because some on sdn recommended to me... what a movie. But I had the privilege of watching it in one part. I did a little searching around on line and found it. It is really good quality!

I LOVE this movie, and I'm so glad to see others enjoyed it as much as I did. It's definitely an inspiring film that really makes you proud. Thanks for starting this thread!

I just saw this wonderful film just a couple hours ago. It not only re-affirmed my desire to be successful in med school, but also reminded me as to why I took an interest to medicine years ago.

Very, very good film.

One of my favorites as well. I actually purchased it on DVD because I liked it so much.

Yes, this is one of my favorite DVDs. Dr. Levi Watkins at the Johns Hopkins University credits as a mentor, who paved the way fro Dr.Watkins to be the first African-American trained cardiothoracic surgeon at Hopkins.

If you like that movie check out "gifted hands" on Netflix it's with Cuba Gooding Jr. Great inspirational flick.
