I'm engaged and will be married August 21 this summer. I'm applying for this cycle. In my personal statement, is it appropriate to refer to my current fiancee as a wife or as a fiancee? The application will be submitted in June, when we are still engaged, but interviews/reviews (if any) are unlikely until post-wedding.

Like I said, a somewhat silly question.

All answers, sarcastic and serious, are greatly appreciated.

Hahah what a cute problem.

Are you asking because you feel like "wife" gives it more legitimacy? If that is the case and she has to do with your motivation for medical school, I'd go ahead and say "wife." After all, it doesn't HAVE to be a legal term.

Heh, I had the exact same situation happen when I applied last cycle. I decided to stick with fiancee, though I'm pretty sure it didn't really make a difference. It came up in one interview and we talked for a minute about when/where we got married. That was it.

What is the context of mentioning a wife, etc., in a PS?

Not sure I understand the need for this.

I'd go with fiancée. It'll be heartwarming for interviewers when you say, "Oh yes, we're happily married now!"
