Hey friends... for those of you that don't know, this SOPA and PIPA business is pretty bad news, especially for us as students!!! Basically it will give the government power to censor or shut down any site that violates any type of copyright laws. In fact, i tried to wikipedia something today and it blacked itself out to raise awareness, that if these bills get passed, many sites like wikipedia, youtube, facebook and SDN 😱 could be shut down or severely restricted!!

Watch this video to get the breakdown on what it is: http://vimeo.com/31100268?utm_sourc...ent=dj_profile_link&utm_campaign=APPLICATIONS

Then PLEASE!!! Sign this petition that google has put together... it will take you less than 30 seconds!!!

Yeah this is pretty important, took me like a minute to sign.

Perhaps reading the bill will help everyone fully understand what it is trying to do. On the first page of the SOPA bill it says anything involving free speech will not be under this bill. It's all about making sure foreign governments stop pirating our media. Don't jump on the bandwagon without first being informed on what the issue really is.

What the government is trying to do and what will actually happen will be two different things.

I have read it... and although it's intentions are noble and i do agree with anti-piracy laws. It is definitely not the correct way to go about it. It will do much more harm than good.

That's right. It's not necessarily what the bill explicitly says that has everyone worried, but rather the broad overreaching, and outright vague language in which it was written. It's the implicit that could be used to combat much more than just online piracy by its traditional definition. The bill says very little with respect to what it considers to be piracy or copyright infringements.

maybe I don't see the greater implications because where I go to school everything is censored so I don't know what it feels like to be free..🙁

I have looked at these bills (SOPS, PIPA, and ACTA) with some interest. The thing here is that they will most likely not do much harm... However, the scary problem at hand is that they do have the potential there to do a lot of harm. Furthermore, this is really going to hinder one of the nations fastest growing sectors in technology, to benefit a relatively small one. All said and done, I find it ironic that this bill is aimed at stopping piracy, when it will do no such thing. I find this legislation frustrating because it is a feeble attempt at addressing a serious issue by people who know nothing on the subject. To their (Congress and the Senate) credit though, they have delayed vote for that very reason. Lets hope some DNS experts can help talk some sense into them.

Meh, what do I know... 🙁

Google and others needs to spend some cash to lobby against this nonsense.

Incidentally, Google has come out against SOPA/PIPA as well as many other major internet sites. Black out Wednesday was successful as 13 senators retracted their support for SOPA.

I wrote letters to my four congresspeople/senators. Three of them sent back letters in a day or two saying they oppose the laws. More specifically, they want to see them re-written to not infringe on the freedom of the internet, including websites like Wikipedia and SDN. There's been a pretty strong backlash against the bills so, hopefully, they got the message.

Its dead, for now at least.

Only to rise again 😀 Will be interesting to see how it's reviewed, and if still not up to par, what exactly Wikimedia, Google, and the like can do about it. I can't see the blackout going over too well the second time around.
