Hey y'all. I'm currently a freshman at a very southern school, and am thinking about going through sorority recruitment next fall as a sophomore. It's something I've wanted to do for a while, and at my school, the sororities/frats seem to provide the best service and leadership opportunities on campus. All of the NPC sororities at my school have great reputations, so if I actually survive the crazy competitive southern rush, I won't be part of a shady chapter or anything!

I'm just really worried that adcomms (especially outside of the south) might not have a very positive view of it and dismiss me because of it.

Do you think it would hurt me at all to go Greek come application time?

edit: I am almost done with my freshman year (about to be a sophomore)! I got a couple of PMs that were under the impression that I was about to start freshman year and just wanted to clear up any confusion) 🙂

Honestly I don't think U have 2 goon a frat/sorority 2 gain leadership experience or access to those opportunities. But if YOU believe that's what's it takes, then by all means join one.

As far as adcoms perception of sorority's, U gotta decide if you are willing to take the risk. I know not all frats/soririty are shady but I wouldn't mention it in my applications (other than if brought up during interviews).

unfortunately they have a negative perception(in my area at least) and I distinctly remember one of the adcoms commenting on how they are vary of applicants in frats (on one of my symposiums).

Frats and sororitys are fun and they will look GOOD on your app b\c it shows your social and are involved with your school etc.. it definitely wont hurt.

If you are doing it ONLY bc you think it gives you better access to leadership opportunities then dont. You can get the same leadership opportunities in a sorority as you do in any other club. They have presidents of chess club and presidents of a sorority.

But anyways, I think you should join a sorority. As long as you can keep your grades up while partying all the time and not become a complete sorostitute you should be fine. It will look some what good on your app

I don't think it matters if you're in a southern school or a west coast school, you can join a sorority if you want. If you put time and effort into the leadership and community service projects, it'll look good. It shouldn't hurt you. Good luck

I listed my sorority as one of my extra curriculars and I don't think it affected me one way or the other. If you want to do it, you should! It was a great experience for me. Just make sure you don't lose focus on school stuff in the midst of all the fun stuff.

Join one if you want for the social aspects and fun. It doesn't really provide exclusive leadership/volunteer opportunities that you wouldn't find on your own. I don't think it really helps or hurts your application though. I would consider not even putting it on the application if you don't have leadership positions or anything positive you can talk about. Don't mention the partying, etc if you do decide to put it on your app.

if you're from texas..stay there. end of story, as long as you want to go to dental school

I agree. Although I am Pre-Pharmacy, I feel the ADCOMs across the board probably are the same in this sense. As long as you get involved, and take the leadership and philanthropic opportunities given to you, then it will be seen as a positive thing. I'm a senior who is applying this summer. I know all of my experiences that I've gained through sorority life can only help my application. Good luck!

Hey,

I suggest you go ahead and join a sorority you like. Many people might tell you that you are buying friends or whatever reasons, but you will have so much fun. I was in a fraternity for four years and was very involved, but still got into dental schools. Yes it could be time consuming but it will also give you many opportunities and fun times 🙂 Do I regret joining? No, not even a bit.

My close female friends from undergraduate who are now at VCU dental school used to be in top-tier sororities at my undergraduate. So, no need to worry about joining.

However, remember that you still need to keep your grades up. Your first year GPAs do count! Adcomm likes well-rounded applicants, so if you have good GPAs/DATs and also involved in many activities, then they will give you bonus points.

Later, if your sorority takes up too much time while you are preparing for DAT, you can always deactivate for a semester or two and comeback, so go ahead join and have fun 🙂

Remember, you are a first year, study hard and party hard 👍

Good luck with rush.

Thanks to all of y'all that gave solid advice! I should've probably clarified that I'm almost done with freshman year, and my grades have been pretty good other than a C in an engineering class my first semester. At my school, most of the organizations that do anything worthwhile are impersonal and carry a pretty hefty price tag anyways, so I feel a sorority would be a really good fit and a great way to meet people!

I was in the biggest sorority on my school campus, and I actually wrote about it in scholarship applications and included it in my personal statement for applying to dental school. I kept my grades up and was the academics chair in my sorority, so I'm sure that helped, but I definitely included it, and I was accepted. It really just depends on what you do with it. 🙂

I was in a large Panhellenic sorority at my school. I mentioned it on my app, in some of my secondary applications and when in interviews I was asked about leadership roles I had, I always brought up being on the executive board of my sorority.

I think there are many positives of being in a sorority. I think everyone in mine knew I wanted to be a dentist and helped me in any way they could. The academic support as well as extracurricular and leadership opportunities a nationally recognized sorority gives you is great.

Adcomms know everyone parties in college. They arent trying to fill their class with a lot of really one dimensional study study study people. I had great success in applying while talking about being greek.

Woah, not too sure about that. There are definitely some squares.
