I know this isnt what this forum is used for but i cant get an answer from anyone, we dont really have reliable optomitrists in the military.

Im trying to order some prescription sunglasses and glasses on the internet from oakley and they told me my prescription was too much. My pupillary distance combined is 62 and their max is 58, and my cyl left eye is -3.25 and thier max is -3.00.

My question is if i just went with the PD 58 and CYL Left -3.00 would if be a big difference in my prescription, would it be a problem even for some sunglasses that i would be wearing outside? So would it be worth spending $200 to make my prescription fit what they need it to be for the glasses/sunglasses. Im getting desperate because i cant find a decent good looking pair of prescription sunglasses. Thanks for replies in advance i really appreciate any help anyone can give.

62 is a normal pd, are you trying to order kids sunglasses? That is the only reason I could think of for the max to be 58, that is smaller than the average adult. And no i do not suggest you illegally change your prescription just so you can order some sunglasses. seriously? There are reasons your prescription is the way it is. Trust me, changing your pd to 58, you will not be able to see and you will not be happy.

I didnt think it was illegal to change a prescription for myself. But no, not kid sunglasses, i read the email from them wrong. Its a minimum of 58mm PD so its just the cyl left eye thats too strong.

-3.25 vs -3.00 cyl is clinically indistinguishable. It's within measurement error.

The cyl isn't a big deal, but changing the pd could be a huge issue, possibly to the point of seeing double or getting an immediate headache.

The issue is that Oakleys and other "wrap" frames have an extreme front surface curve and there are limits on what Rx can be put in them.

There are labs that could make the exact Rx, so you could get the frame only from Oakley and send it there.

Ordering prescription eyewear online has lots of risks, and this is one of them.

Would you think it would be okay to change your prescription for tylenol to morphine cause you think you'd like that more?

I find this part of your post terribly offensive. Either you never went to the military eye clinic, or they wouldn't do what you wanted.

Similarly, I think if you wanted to get what you want by subterfuge, I would have thought that you would have tried another story. To downgrade the efforts of the military optometrist, whom I've known many before, is shameful.

haha, if that were true tylenol would become obsolete

To the OP, just get the frames and take em to a lab that will do the lenses. You won't want to wear them with the wrong PD so it will just be a waste of money.

I agree... most Optometrist enter Military through HPSP and it is a very selective process. Once in the Military... Optometrist practice full scope so I find it hard to believe any good Military OD is any less efficient at giving an eye exam than any good civilian OD. If you didn't like the particular Optmetrist you had contact with, seek another. But don't make a ridiculous blanket statement that degrades these fine OD's. 😳
