I was fortunate enough to receive 6 interviews this season, all at southeastern schools. I don't have a significant other, so very flexible on location. However, I am not sure how these schools compare in terms of reputation or quality of programs:

Lexington
Memphis
MCG
Jacksonville
USC Columbia
Missouri Columbia

Any thoughts....

I don't know anything about Jacksonville but as far as the others.

None have a strong reputation but all are solid programs. I think Memphis and Lexington are the best of those. USC is probably the bottom of them. Mizzo and MCG are good programs overall but nothing overly amazing or bad about them.

My top pick would be Lexington though

Jacksonville is very new which I am sure you know. It seems to be on the up and up. Very strong in Retina. The Surgical numbers are overall very good. They are still recruiting a couple more attendings. However, I know it is kind of difficult right now for residents to get solid interview offers in competitive specialties at top academic centers simply because they are so new of a program. This may change in the next couple years as the program gets more attention. All the residents are very happy there.

MCG is very good and seems to be improving with the new chair who is recruiting new attendings from strong programs to come down to MCG. They have some brilliant faculty who trained at some top academic centers. However, Augusta seems to be a pretty terrible city to live in as far as things to do.

Any thoughts (preferably from residents/fellows/attendings) on Jacksonville vs USC Columbia vs UTMB vs Tulane

Thanks!

UT Memphis very strong program...I only ranked it lower because of location but training wise its great

Lexington is the best of the bunch. Strong surgical numbers and strong in retina. They have a good retina fellowship.

2nd would be UT Memphis. Nice eye institute, a lot of faculty & strong in plastics (they have a combined ASOPRS plastics fellowship with Vanderbilt).

I would rate MCG 3rd. Solid surgical numbers, no fellowships so residents do everything, nice faculty, nice new eye research institute, actively recruiting more faculty.

Jacksonville and Mizzou are probably comparable.

I would rate USC last.

I interviewed at a few of the programs.

I did not interview at UT Memphis but I have heard its a solid program.

Kentucky is also a solid program with a very personable chair and good basic science research in retina.

Uf-Jax: I thought this is a good program, but as others have stated fellowships matching maybe tough although the attendings seem to be well connected. I personally think you have to consider living in Florida a huge plus.

MCG: Somebody mentioned a "new chair"; he's been here for a while. There is a ton of basic science research in all areas of the eye. The Vision Discovery Institute is in its infancy, theres talk about a building going up maybe in 2055. Residents match extremely well into fellowships if they are motivated. Surgical numbers are above average here with a unique prison experience.

Which interview did you leave with a good feeling?

thanks everybody for all the great replies. They have been really helpful.

Hook17, I actually felt really good about the USC program, which leaves me a little conflicted about how to rank, as everyone is saying that it is not a great program.

Does anyone know why USC has such a bad reputation?

I didn't interview there but a friend of mine interviewed and really liked it. I think they had some issues a few years ago but the department is apparently stable now.

Sorry to post again, but any thoughts on UF Jacksonville vs USC Columbia vs UTMB vs Tulane

THANKS!

I think USC columbia is on its way up, I attended medical school there. They have a semi-new chair there (he has been there for a few years) but he is an excellent program coordinator. He has recruited new clinical faculty the past few years and now he has coverage in all surgical subspecialities - they did not have oculoplastics last year, just got a guy this year. Overall the numbers are above average with a VA at the medical school, they have coverage in all areas, have some great residents there now and an excellent chair. I believe they have had a bad reputation in the past due to lack of clinical faculty in all areas, but with the new program director that has been rectified

I did not visit UTMB but I met someone from that school that chose not to apply. I heard its had a tough time recovering after the hurricane.
