I'm trying to teach myself Spanish from scratch before medical school, or at least as much as I can. Is anyone out there doing the same or interested in doing so?

If so, is anyone interested in being "spanish buddies" to practice with?

I wouldn't be learning it from scratch, as i already speak some spanish, but i don't use it much living in philly now, so i could certainly stand to brush-up and practice wtih you.

there's always email? haha althoguh i would rely on that...that was always my problem i was decent at writing and reading and comprehension, but have a lot of trouble with speaking. I always just combine it with french and make them into one language.

me alegra saber que hay futuros medicos que se preocupar por practicar el idioma espanol...culaquier ayuda que necesiten me dejan saber...way to go!

anyways, i want to start from scratch too. how are you doing this on your own?

I bought some audio programs I listen to in my car, some cd-rom programs I practice at home, and checked out books from the library. It seems slow going, but I'm actually learning a lot.

I thought it would be cool if we started an e-mail thread to those interested where we e-mailed each other, or posted somewhere, but all posts had to be in spanish, so if you don't understand it, you have to look it up, and if you don't know how to say it, you have to figure it out.

Confusion is a great motivator. :)

Necesito a practicar mi espanol.
I recently bought some medical Spanish workbooks off amazon. I recommend Complete Medical Spanish : A Practical Course for Quick and Confident Communication (Paperback). It reviews Spainish principles (i.e. conjugation, fem v. masc) and gives medical and non medical vocab. The later chapters are broken down into specific types of doctor visits (i.e. OB/GYN v. ER).

email thread sounds great, count me in. I'm assuming we're sharing our emails in PMs or something since people try to preserve some form of anonymity, but i'm lazy, so mine is [email protected].

(Good luck everyone, with the apps and with Spanish!) :):luck::luck:

LOL, see! A couple of posts and I'm already wanting to pull out my spanish dictionary. Tell you what, if you have a problem with us using regular e-mail, let me know, otherwise, we'll plan on doing a reply-to-all e-mail thread. Post your e-mail here, or PM me with it, and I'll compile a list and send out the first e-mail soon. We can keep adding people to the list as it grows. How exciting!

For future reference, my e-mail is [email protected].

Ciao!

Yo me interesaría mucho a hablar con otros estudiantes en espanol. Yo estoy estudiando en la universidad, pero quiero aprender más vocabulario medico. Hay alguien qué sepa un libro buneo con este tipo de vocabulario?

(haha... excuse any mistakes! :p)

Has anyone tried something like Rosetta Stone? or TELL me more Spanish?

I am intermediate lvl spanish, learned it all on my own. I'd love to chat and work on my spanish with you all, more for myself than for medicine though. I also have a few great programs/books you can buy/download to help you out a lot.

My e-mail is [email protected]. I'll get and touch and feel free to get in touch with me!

personally i wouldnt spend the hundred (or whatever they charge) dollars on a program to help you learn. i learned spanish with a workbook that was like 29 bucks or something, i think its probably the best book i ever used when it came to wanting to learn spanish. give me a jingle if you want to know what book it was, i think i still have it somewhere. also, along with the workbook, i was surrounded by spanish speakers only.....so my second bit is if you want to learn it well, and quick, you have to speak it, and lots of it. those are two suggestions that worked for me, so PM if you want the name of the book or have any question:thumbup:

¡Si, se puede! I would be more than willing to help. I am taking my last course right now to finish my BA in Spanish. I've been speaking it for about 8 years, have taken medical spanish at the 4900 level in college and I speak it everyday in the ER where I work. PM me for my email address and I'll help whenever I can:).

I speak fluent Spanish (native), so if you need help, let me know! Or if you just want to practice writing/conversing.

The offer extends to whomever is interested! :)

I took spanish in hs for 4 yrs....but I'm sure I have forgotten a lot of it. Maybe when writing spanish on thread, would you guys mind translating...or would that deter my learning.

And why not use this thread to practice!

The plan is for anyone interested in learning or helping others to learn to send me their e-mail, and I will compile an e-mail list, in which we will all send spanish-only e-mails. Those spanish speakers can feel free to correct us who are learning, but the rule is to stay as English-free as possible. So, send me your e-mail addy's if you want to hop on board. I've already got a few.

[email protected]. It would be nice to keep my Spanish up to par. I have taken 5 semesters of college Spanish and intend to take two more. I hope to be quite fluent some day.

I´m posting from Santiago right now (in between classes). You could be here next week if you felt motivated.

Also I´ve done Rosetta stone before, great for vocabulary and not so great for grammar. Best if you´ve had Spanish in HS or college.

I'm about to declare Spanish as my minor and start a Spanish club at my school, but I've been studying the language for years and I'm not being challenged in my current courses...in fact I'm quite rusty. lol My dearest ambition is to go to Spain.

i just got rosetta stone and am about to break it out! but it turns out i got the xp version, and i have vista on my computer... one more thing i hate vista for

i doubt you'll be able to effectively learn spanish this way. best way to learn is go to mexico and immerse yourself.

I took 2 years latin (took a latin tour with the school) and 2 years spanish last summer I spent 5 weeks in spain to brush up. I hadn't forgot as much as I thought. It came back very quickly. In Spain I was told they like spanish... not Mexican ..spanish there is a difference.

right now I don't live in an area with a large Spanish speaking population...so guess short of taking more academic classes (which is not what I'm as interested in as what I would learn through immersion), and since immersion is not an option...any suggestions? I've taken French, and while not fluent I can understand, and read well enough to get by (not being modest...I'm really just ok), so Spanish isn't a big leap, but I want to be fluent in conversation primarily...any suggestions are welcome!

You can pick up a lot listening to music in a foreign language.

how long would it take to learn spanish fluently if you just throw yourself into a spanish speaking country and only know pretty basic spanish.

I'm interested, if you can put me on the list, [email protected] . I learned a little bit in college, I'm trying to brush up using Rosetta Stone. Can you guys recommend any good work books?

Depends on the person... I have a friend that can speak fluent spanish from just working in a Mexican restaurant for 9 months. I would say that between 6-12 months to become fluent. However, do realize that every place has very different accents and vocabulary. I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and when I talk to people from Mexico or South America, we sometimes have a hard time understanding each other sometimes, but we can obviously still have a conversation. But, that is the only way really to learn a language. You have to completely immerse yourself in the language and culture

I studied abroad in spain and didnt learn that much spanish since I hung out with mostly americans there. I mean I learned some but not as much as I should have. But while teaching english in Mexico, I have learned sooo much more because my friends and my students only speak spanish. So now Im pretty much fluent. I guess its what you make of it.
