Hi all,
Do you know what can be done if the speciality I am interested in is not offered for residency within the military? I am an osteopathic student, and really enjoy OMM. So, I am interested in a residency where I can learn and practice OMM on a regular basis. My top choice right now is neuro-muscular medicine.
Thanks for the help.

Full Time Out Service training ie. civilian residency.

Consider Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The Army offers a excellent residency ar Walter Reed and has several Osteopaths on staff who practice OMM as well as other alternative and complementary medical techniques such as acupuncture. They are also approving many civilian deferments for this vitally needed (but under-recognized) specialty.

Which speciality are you referring to, PMR or Neuro-muscular medicine?

I am in the desert sitting next to a doc who also wanted to do an OMM residency. He ended up doing internal medicine because the AF wouldn't let him do OMM. He hates internal medicine. When he gets out he plans to have a full-time OMM/musculoskeletal practice. Good luck.

If you are Navy, it is unlikely you will be given a deferral for training in OMM. Not a high priority for Navy Medicine.

can't you just do a FM residency then apply for an OMM fellowship after you serve your time? My OMM professor told me most docs that decide to pursue a fellowship have some sort of primary care background

that is a definate possibility, but who wants to loss that many years in training and skills.

If it's not listed as a possibility on the IFB, don't plan on doing that specialty in the AF. I guess they could always put out supplemental results, but don't hold your breath. No PM&R spots available = No residency for you in PM&R. One of the side effects of joining military medicine: less freedom to choose.
