I am currently a dental student and I was wondering what type of qualifications schools look for when one applies for a specializing program such as pediatric dentistry. Is there a certain minimum GPA or class rank that they look for?

EDIT: I've read through a couple of old SDN threads and it seems that there isn't a lot of updated information out there. If anyone has updated info (now that boards are pass/fail), please don't hesitate to post! :)

Thanks in advance!

Grades and board scores help do help, but I think what is most important in Pedo is personality and some sincere interest.

Faculty are looking for someone easy to work with, as well as some one who is humble, willing to learn, has a likeable personality and is socially intelligent. Basically,,,, be ( hopefully you already are ) a likeable person. If this is not you,,,, don't do pedo.

Experience working with kids and/ or a resume showing extra work in the pedo dent world is helpfull (eg,,, working summers in a pedo office, pedo externships , clubs in dental school , and clerkships in dental school).

I think post grad experience like a pedo friendly GPR is very very very helpfull as well.

I am a pedo specialist 12 years in PP. I was maybe top 35 of 100 in my graduating class. I had good, but not great board scores,,,, But I had a ton of extra curricular pedo specific experience in my resume. I also did a great GPR after dental school. I got into a good residency and had a great experience in residency mostly because of my GPR and extra experiences.

Pedo is awesome though,,,,, I LOVE it! I could not image being a GP. I feel so sorry for all those who have to work with adults!
Good luck To!
