Can anyone comment on the curriculum at UB and particularly how it supports it's students for specialization. I'm aware it can be done at any school, but the fact is that some schools are simply better suited than others for those interested in specialties.

I'm specifically interested in OMS, so if anyone has any insight it would be greatly appreciated!

I don't think the curriculum is geared toward specialization. Do yourself a favor and attend a school with a medically-integrated curriculum if you want OMS.

Perhaps current Buffalo students can chime in with more info though.

If you do well in your courses, do research and get involved, get strong letters and score high on the standardized exams, you can specialize

If you're looking for a med school curriculum, Stony Brook has it for a year.

I graduated from UB over 10 years ago. Many of my friends and colleagues from there are specialists. If you want to specialize, you have to stay focused and make it happen no matter where you go. Our curriculum used to be taught by the medical school faculty, but with all the recent exam changes of NBDE part 1 going to pass/fail and stuff, I don't know how applicable this is anymore.

Our biomedical courses are still taught predominantly by MDs and PhDs, but we only take 1.5 courses concurrently with med students first semester (gross anatomy and the beginning half of histology). No doubt about it, studying for, and acing the CBSE will be more difficult if you go to Buffalo than going to a school where the first two years are entirely integrated with the med students (Harvard, uconn). That said, the majority of Dental schools are separate from their respective medical schools, so Buffalo is no different in that regard. We have a strong record of students specializing, and if you want it, the opportunities are there. Like any school, you need to he proactive and seek them out. Good luck with your decision, feel free to PM.
