D1 here, and I was wondering if there is a thread here dedicated to "how to specialize in dentistry"? I tried looking for it but I wasn't able to find it 🙁
If anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey everyone. Can someone give me an explanation or timeline on how you decide and get into a specialization? I mean do you just randomly decide you wanna do it then apply? What is a "residency" ? Is it like med school where ur just working and getting a little pay? Or do u have to pay like...

Do you have to be in the top 10% to be accepted into residencies? Can you still be considered a strong applicant if you're in 20 or even 30%?

I feel like, generally speaking, if you’re in the top 20% you’re definitely in the running. What specialty are you targeting specifically?

Well right now I'm a first year and I feel like I don't know a whole lot about all the specialties! I do know that I'm not that interested in OMFS but everything else seems interesting. My rank right now is 10 (out of 105) but I'm not sure if I will be able to keep it high until I apply 😳

I went to my state school to save money 🙂 and I think it'll be about $250,000-$270,000.

That leaves some doors open, as many specialty programs charge tuition. If you owed $650,000 and wanted to add another $200,000 to that, I’d say you’re out of your mind.

Your best resource would be to reach out to upperclassmen applying to the specialty you want.

Yes. May not be a competitive one, but I have heard of people matching at the bottom of their class to a GPR/AEGD.
