Specialties in which you can listen to music while working

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Pathology? Radiology?

Psychiatry. For those times when your patients are just going on and on and ON AND ON about their personal problems and how nobody likes them and blah blah blah. Like it's all about them or something.

Sometimes you just need to put in some earbuds, crank up the Greenday, and let your patient blather.

Surgery is a big one.
A lot of surgeons listen to a music of their preference while operating.

Ive heard surgeons listen to classical music mostly. A few of my friends shadowed competitive specialty surgeons who listened to hip hop and EDM/Dubstep

One of my surgeons was blasting Greenday - Dookie when I was wheeled into the OR. Another was listening to Kanye. There was one surgeon who didn't care for music in the OR and did his work with relative silence or idle chit chat.

Just make sure you whatever you do, you can work with those giant headphones that seem to come stapled to the head of every college freshman these days.

Radiologists I shadowed had hip-hop blasting. They were chill as hell.

"Sorry Mr. Doe! I can't hear you over my Metallica! You have what symptoms?"

There should be a clinic where it's cool to listen to music anywhere, but it has to be John Cage.

When a friend of mine was in med school during her first surgery, the docs played Weird Al's "Like a Surgeon". No joke.

Pathology I'd actually recommend against playing music because you don't want to groove so hard that you miss a mitosis.

I agree with folks saying surgery!

When I shadowed in the OR, one of the physicians was listening to rap (I think it was Tupac). Another was listening to Top40 pop while making super morbid jokes about how they could easily paralyze the patient if they nicked "this nerve that they were showing me"
😱

Except for a lonely few, all of the docs play music at our ERs. It almost unnerving when you're with one who doesn't.

I'd say 90 percent of the ORs where I work have music playing in them. About three quarters of those have the tunes picked by the CRNA.

Anecdotally, the plastics and ortho guys seem the most into dominating the music selection, and they like to rock out.

Don't forget to nod and say "tell me more" 😀 Then script a few benzos and you'll have a customer for life 😱
