specialties

Does anyone know the criteria for admissions into specialties (namely ortho)? Is it important that a student have stellar marks throughout dental school or are boards and practical experience (summer research, clinical competence) of more importance? Information would be greatly appreciated. I am curious since if grades in dental school are of great importance then I see it as a decision that must be made early.
