If you solve for a specific gravity...For example a block of 500 kgm^-3/1000 kgm^-3...would this give you the height of the object above water or below water?

Density of Object/Density of fluid = Volume submerged/Volume of the object
So it is the portion that is below water.

You can derive it via archamedies principle.
