Hey,
Can anyone help out on how best to improve on my reading speed. I am currently doing ok on accuracy in VR questions, but I need to be able to complete it. I would appreciate every practical suggestion & recomended books.

Thanks.

A friend of mine took a speed reading course at a local junior college. He felt that it helped him tremendously. He didn't grow up speaking english and certainly never read much as a kid. I, on the other hand, read a lot, and I think that was the key to my success. I practiced for the verbal section a couple of ways. One, I did tons of practice tests, all those that I could get my hands on, and I always did them in a timed environment, just like the real thing. I also tried to read a lot, something I do normally. Don't read easy stuff, though, and when you are reading, even if it's for enjoyment, conciously try to read as fast as possible. That's all I can say...there are no easy tricks, only hard work and practice.

Good luck,

Adam

Try to read at least 40 minutes every morning or so, just random well written stuff. Nationally known op/ed pages ie NY times, Wall Street Jounal etc. (I'm biased since I'm from NY but you know what I mean) work really well. magazines like the economist is great. Also literary magazines like the New Yorker provides reading much like the MCAT. Again read for speed and for the main ideas and points the author makes. Read critically, that way you tend to anticipate questions that could be asked of the author. This should help you on all sections since much of the science MCAT is deriving info from the passage to solve problems.

Thanks guys! I will try and work on your suggestions. A friend also suggest I read critical inquiry on social sciences in addition to all readings that you suggested. I pray it works. However, If you know of any good book that teaches strategy of speed reading and comprehension with lots of practices in addition to keeping up with reading, please let me know. Thanks again.
