Speeding up Goljan lectures?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i just played the files in quicktime and you can adjust it to 2x or even 3x speed. If you cant play it in quicktime (i had this problem initially) put it in Itunes highlight it and do Convert to MP3, then you should be able to play it in quicktime and adjust the speed no problem.

good idea to speed up the lectures...

do you guys find that you are still able to understand what he's saying and get all the important points down?

i will def try to speed them up the second time i go through them, but do you think it's okay to listen to them at 2x speed for the first run through?

thanks

I use Winamp and a plug-in called Pacemaker (both free) - you can speed it up any amount up to 2x normal speed without changing the pitch so it doesn't sound like a chipmunk lecturing (although there is some entertainment value in that). I've used it all year for AVI lectures (some of my professors are WAY better at 150-167% than they are at normal speed). Usually up to about 25-30% faster than normal speech isn't so much faster that you even notice it, but you get through an hour of material a lot faster. (especially once you get used to listening to lectures at high speed - try speeding it up by 5% every couple of minutes if you're having a hard time)

how do you do this on your ipod? I know you have to convert the files to .m4b but how do you do this?

In Itunes on your computer, right click and then choose the convert to m4b thing. Itunes will convert it for you. The new converted file will show up on your library as the second one with the same title. Delete the first one. Create a playlist with all the newly converted files and then update your ipod.

thanks for the tip but when I right click the only "convert" option I have is to AAC (which the file is already in). when I go into my preferences folder m4b is not listed??? I have iTunes 6 so it's not like I'm using an old version. where am I going wrong?

thanks,

this is what I've come up with so far, but if you can actually do it right in iTunes I think it would be easier.

Is there an easy way to do this, to get these files at a higher speed on an iPod?

The Goljan lectures that I have downloaded is missing one lecture(I think). On Day 4, instead of having "Hepatobiliary - Pancreas 1", there is a repeat lecture of "Neoplasia3 - Hematology1".....I'm looking for "Hepatobiliary - Pancreas 1" lecture. Does anyone have it?😳

Thanks

In case you don't already know, if you try to play from the cd-rom/dvd drive directly, you generally cannot play faster than 1x in Windows Media Player. You have to save it to your hard disk and then play the file locally. There are plug-ins for WM player that are free or require a payment. They can improve the audio quality of the files, generate effects, and some enable faster playing from a cd. Access WM plug-ins from the menu bar and then click "search for audio plug-ins," or something to that effect.

I use Creative Mediasource Player, which does allow me to play 2x directly from the CD/DVD drive.

Oh, yeah, another thing: The Goljan lectures are imprecise in the classification of each lecture in terms of systems/topics covered for each cd. I found that some CD's overlapped in subject matter with the next one. It was important to me because I split everything up to correspond to what I was doing in class at the same time.

That's what I did too! On a PC I think WinAmp + PaceMaker = the best and cheapest way to become much more efficient with Goljan (although for everything to sink in I had to rewind alot when I had it too fast, thus kinda defeating the purpose of saving time, at least for those more concentrated segments) and especially certain speed-impaired on-campus professors!

everytime I update my ipod, I loose the goljan lectures, I already converted to AAC the first time, it worked, but now, when I try to update, it says the file type is unplayable on this ipod 🙁. How do you get the lectures to stay on your ipod?

thanks

how useful do you guys find goljan's lectures to be? not just in terms of USMLE prep but also in terms of learning about pathology.

thanks🙂
