Spelling it out for Adcoms or do they look closely enough to figure it out?

Suppose something odd comes up on your application (suppose you have a 2 month break on an activity that would otherwise have gone for 36 months straight). The reason is that you broke your leg. Now suppose that you write about that experience (which is breaking your leg) in your secondary, and you mention that it happened during, say, early 2014, and early 2014 is also the gap in your activity. Will an adcom be able to piece it together that the broken leg was the reason, or will you have to straight up clearly state "I broke my leg and couldn't do it for these two months"?

P.S. It's obvious that the activity cannot be done with a broken leg

I don't think they would notice (or care about) a 2 month activity gap to begin with.. but that's just me. Personally, I don't see a problem with listing the activity in a continuous 36 month period without mentioning the gap.

In general though for other issues, I think it's better to be explicit on your application to make it easy for your readers. Adcoms aren't there to 'connect the dots' or solve mini-mysteries.

There's no need to mention these gaps. This can only hurt you, not help you. If you took a couple one or two week vacations, would you mention those? Make sure you're honest about the total number of hours.

Why are you mentioning a gap at all?

But it's dishonest to mention it as a continuous activity, even if the total hours are correct

Did you 'quit' the activity or 'take a leave of absence' -- informally, if that's how it works for that activity. If you essentially QUIT - than yeah, it's dishonest. But if you said "I broke my leg so can't participate until it heals - I'll be back" then that's not dishonest.

If you didn't resign and reapply it's still a continuous activity.
Even IF this was to raise and eyebrow just simply stating "oh I had a broken leg" when asked in your interview is sufficient to explain it. Don't go borrowing trouble

I'm curious about this as well because my clinical volunteering is sporadic and occurs when I go home for breaks (Jan, March, April, August, October, Jan) with a few days for each of those months. Could this still be listed as continuous? I am not resigning or anything in between.

I agree that this was a continuous activity. Do not say there was a "gap." It would be weird to point it out, and nobody will care, anyhow.

I would put your start and end dates and then make it clear in the description that it was during breaks only.
