I read over some statistics which said that spine surgeons make over 1 million a year. Is this true guys? If it is, I would imagine it would be horribly difficult to get that residency.

not always called neurosurgeons. there is a growing number of "orthopedic spine surgeons", too. both could earn 1M is a good practice in a good area if they wanted to work long enough hours.
Spine surgery is a fellowship (at least two years long, I would imagine) after you complete an orthopedic residency program, which is five years. So yes, you probably have to be the best of the best (if not a bit masochistic - 7 years?!) to go into spine or hand surgery.
Bottom line - if you need spine surgery, go with an ortho spine surgeon. they are generally much better with the latest techniques and minimally invasive techniques to minimize post-op pain - especially with respect to dissection of the muscles in order to gain access to the spine itself.
More traditionally, spine surgery is done by neurosurgeons...but there are now a bunch of ortho guys doing it too. If they get paid that...they probably deserve it. Spine procedures (diskectomy/fusion/laminectomy) are by far the most boring procedures i have seen.
