I am interested in helping cover high school teams or other sporting events. However, I am just starting my training and, given my lack of experience, I am afraid of encountering a situation such as a concussion and making the wrong decision. The athlete would suffer and I would be responsible.

For those who have experience covering sporting events, do you find that certain rotations should be completed beforehand? Is the process of being allowed to cover more difficult than expected? Would I have to get some sort of insurance?

this is not something you may be ready for on your own alone during residency. In residency I always went to events under an attending's supervision. The training program would have to approve these outside events and get the university's approval for malpractice to cover you. sports fellowship gives you the best exposure, locker room time, working with the ATC's and coaches, etc.

Most games have an ATC there, and most of them know concussions, fractures, etc. go there to learn from them at first.

When in doubt, pull the kid out. I'd rather piss off a coach than have a kid have an ICH.
