Any ideas for a spouse gift? Graduating soon and would like to thank my wife. No jewelry or trips but something meaningful for all the support. Help?

well crap, I read this and immediately thought take her on a cruise or something, but you already shot that idea down... I'm not sure what else. A promise to take her on at least one date a month during residency??

Would she like a gift certificate to a day spa/massage place?

Oh Yeah! Date Night. That's where it's at. I'm not even kidding. I think I just figured out what to get my wife (of 9 years, together for 16) for her birthday this year. Better late than never. I'll probably have to make up for the last 3 years once I start my research years in July but that'll be OK.

Seriously, if you can promise your wife one or two nights a month where it's just the two of you, no work, no worries, just hanging out and sharing whatever it was that brought you two together in the first place, it will go a long way to smoothing out the inevitable bumps on the residency road.

This is very mundane and not "romantic", but if my wife is any indication, the best thing I every bought her was house cleaning maid service twice a month. Sounds stupid, but believe me, she will love it.
We have had a house cleaner since med school and won't ever be without this service.

awwwh.
How sweet!
Giving your wife a present 🙂

I agree with either helping out w/the housework (I know everyone thinks we women like it but I personally hate ALL of it except washing dishes, which I find oddly relaxing) or hiring a maid service/house cleaners.

Second choice would be the date night thing...we just like a little of your time + attention 🙂

Dejavu - Thats's an awesome idea! Take it from me, we've been married for 6 years, together for 12, have 2 kids who help out a bit but the housework is never done! I would love for someone to do floors, bathrooms and windows. You can customize what services you want. Like I wouldn't want anyone doing our laundry. I'm starting pre-med and my husband actually suggested that idea already! We already do the 2 nights a month having wine and talking about life so date night is EH. I would go with the maid service most definately and another idea - if she likes purses, maybe a nice name brand purse like Coach, Juicy Couture, Luis Vuitton, etc? Let us know what you come up with and how she likes it.

Some good ideas.

I LOVE cruises. They are the best. I like Carnival more than Royal Caribbean.

I got my wife a Dulce and Gibbana (sp?) purse and that was a big hit.

I suggested the idea of cleaning person and it pissed my wife off, she took it as an insult. Be careful how you phrase it.

I bought her, what is for us, a very expensive dress for graduation. It was $600 or so. We went into this special dress shop, she went straight for this one dress and I thought she was kidding - to me it looked like a Walmart princess costume. I laughed until I realized she was not kidding. My favorite was this emerald green satin dress, but whatever..... she got the princess dress.

So sweet of you...! 🙂
I am sure that she will appreciate the thought whatever you get her!

Here's my two cents worth..

As a woman, I think the cleaning service sounds absolutely splendid.
But.. I don't think this is something I would consider a 'present'.
My husband has always offered to get a cleaning service and I appreciate that very much and although I think it's an extremely thoughtful gesture I think cleaning is something both partners should be doing anyway and getting a cleaning service would = giving both yourselves a present.

But.. if she's doing all the cleaning, you couldn't go wrong with that.

Don't get me wrong.. I would LOVE the cleaning service but I wouldn't like the idea of it being given to me as a 'gift'.

If you both do your household tasks together, then you may want to get her something 'purely' for HER.

Like a really nice watch that she normally wouldn't splurge on..
Or something extravagant involved with one of her hobbies like a kayak/new bike/set of private yoga classes/diving lessons/tennis lessons.

I don't think you'll go wrong. End of the day the most important thing to her is that you cared enough to do all of this!

Would ladies prefer a day at the spa themselves or as a couple? There are packages for both and I'm not sure which to get.

When on holiday my husband got this spa massage for both of us and I really enjoyed the experience of being there together! We couldn't really talk very much but it was definitely entertaining being there together and it's a great memory as we got into the pool afterward. More of an event than going alone.

Obviously lots of people feel that the Spa is more for the ladies but if she's up for a jolly good time and is a fun loving sort she'll love being there with you.

I think either would be great - depends on whether you like getting the treatments. Or if you decide just for her, I'd go all out and get a comprehensive package with massage, facial, mani/pedi.

Other ideas: home-cooked dinner for two (if you cook!), digital photo album, tickets to a show/concert/something you both would enjoy attending

I really like the date nights throughout residency and cleaning help if your wife is very busy with work or school.
