Medical Trip-Volunteering
Another NC kid here (Willmingtooon). Me and some friends rented out a room at this pretty decent all inclusive resort down in Cancun!! So excited. I've done Florida and the Bahamas freshman/sophomore year respectively. So I'll complete the SB trifecta. I may have worked my ass off last semester, but that equals an awesome tax refund 😛.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't matter if its PCB, Cancun, or Gary Indiana. When you get a mass influx of college kids its going to get freaking wild. I mean we always go to PCB just because its close and cheaper.
But who cares- start the countdown, start shotgunning Natty's in the shower before class to get ready for Spring Break '10

I'm going to D.R. on my fourth medical mission. We already have 150 patients lined up for surgery. Maybe it sounds lame, but I'm really excited that the mission coincides with my spring break for the first time in four years!

Going to some place in Arizona w/ a bunch of friends for SB. Place looks awesome.. huge club in the middle of the hotel, pool in the middle of the club, amazing beach/lake kinda thing going on. Just looks like a fun, drunken time

That sounds so cool, so what all do you get to do?? And how did you get into the medical mission trips?
I live in Tallahassee, which is about 3 hours away from Panama City Beach. It is a common hot-spot among the undergrads at FSU, as well as all the other universities in Florida. I haven't yet gone and experienced Spring Break there but many of my friends have. I've heard many crazy stories about the Panama City Beach spring break environment! You should have a blast!

Thanks! Relatively speaking, I've done nothing. I worked as a surgical technologist and a surgeon I befriended invited me along as his personal "scrub nurse" one year. He grew up in Ecuador, and the minute he became a *real* attending he started volunteering there. He recruited a friend of his from residency the next year, and they slowly got the ball rolling. Five years later, there were almost 30 of us involved, and that year, we performed over 100 surgeries (ENT, plastics, orthopedics, dentistry, GYN, and general surgery) at no cost to patients.
My first of three missions there convinced me to go back to school to become a physician. I've only been involved in recruiting and fundraising. This year, the mission coincides with my spring break, and I'm really excited to return as someone who is still just a scrub nurse, but will someday be able to either give anesthesia or perform life-changing surgeries. Either way, I'm excited to contribute my limited skills to the mission that helped me figure out what I really want to do with my life.

Haha. Might go to the AMSA National Convention in Anaheim and, of course, study for the MCAT. It'll be a much better spring break after an acceptance. 😉
