Ssn

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We don't accept social security or any form of government assistance, so we have no need for SSN's. That's our religion. We are also forbidden to drive cars, so no one ever has a driver license. Some do have a driver license but they are allowed to not have pictures on their driver licenses since our religion also prohibits taking pictures. So exceptions were made and the state governments said it is okay if our driver licenses didn't have pictures on them (at least before 9/11).

"According to (a)(2)(B) of Public Law 93-579 (the Privacy Act), “a requirement for the disclosure of a social security number to any Federal, State, or local agency” is only lawful if such requirements were “in existence and operating before January 1, 1975.” Thereby, Congress prohibits any Federal, State, or local agency from adopting enforceable laws or regulations after January 1, 1975 that require a social security number from people." Source: http://www.scribd.com/doc/2682567/Social-Security-Number-Not-Required

Now even if AMCAS was a state, local or federal agency, the SSN requirement was not in existence before 1975, so they cannot ask for my SSN.

Also see http://articles.latimes.com/1997/oct/25/local/me-46419 where a judge ruled that five men don't need SSN's to get driver licenses.

Or you'll have to give them your driver's license number. In either case, numbers will be involved. 😀

I never had a driver license either.

Also, you will definitely have to work on the Sabbath, and probably every Sabbath for like 5 years as a resident. I want to respect your beliefs and everything, but if you want to go in to this field, well, you might have to adjust some of your habits/expectations if not your beliefs (are you OK with examining a person of the opposite sex? are you OK talking about sex with a patient? are you OK not wearing you Almish hat in the OR? lol) - I dont know anything about your beliefs, but you know, these are things to consider.

Oh and you'll definitely have to have your picture on your ID badge in a hospital... quite a few bumps here. And you can't expect everybody to make exceptions for you - that's not going to happen. You will have your photo on your ID badge like everyone else if you go down this road, and your patients will have numbers assigned to them.

You can get exemptions for those kinds of things from religious leaders. You cannot get an exemption for SSN's.

"Government assistance" funds residency programs, so good luck with that, I guess.
And working in public hospitals or paying for school without federal loan programs.
But, outside that, it's totally possible to avoid accepting government assistance or being numbered in some way.

If that's the case, then I dont see a problem. Call up AMCAS, tell them you dont have an SSN or wish not to use it, and see what they say. There's probably a protocol. But I still think you should carefully consider all the obstacles that this career will have for you. A physicians life is, pretty much, a very very modern life full of modern technologies and the requirements commensurate to said modern life. You will have all kinds of numbers assigned to you as a physician.

Also, I'm just going to throw this out there: as a "humanist" or "atheist" or whatever you want to call it, I find these beliefs a little archaic and irksome. Having said that, I understand your religion is also your cultural heritage, and I don't give Dutch people a hard time for wearing wooden clogs and dancing around.

But a Dutch person isn't going to insist on wearing wooden clogs and dancing around in an operating room. I hope that you will similarly understand that you have to compromise at times, and you cannot expect the world the bend its knee for you. I promise you that you will not get every Friday or Sunday off or whatever day you consider holy.

And neither am I going to insist on wearing wooden clogs and dance around an operating room. You have the right to find my beliefs archaic and irksome just as I have the right to view you as an intolerant and prejudiced individual.

Wow. I just read OPs post history and I think this whole thing is a non-starter. He is going to treat hirsutism, separate conjoined twins, do facial reconstruction and practice as a GP for his worldwide people or they will choose death over receiving service from another physician. This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Are you going to practice alone, a la 1844? "The man" issues licenses for physicians to practice in a state as well as ID numbers for practice and to prescribe drugs.
What are you going to specialize in, and which hospital is going to give you surgical privileges, having not done a government supported residency? What kinds of nurses, other physicians, etc are going to work with you in your all-encompassing practice, if any?

Also,

I invoke Burnett's law on everyone in this thread.

Clearly you've never been to an Amsterdam ER.
Great fun for all.

Haha hacked this a/c
Technically it is not hacking - you need to log out of the computers in the library before you leave.

You're making a logical error. Or you have severe comprehension problems.

I choose severe comprehension problems! As in I have no idea how anything you say makes any sense or in anyway resembles a plausible plan.
I'm going to go watch Inception right now to clear my mind.

Also, we can rule out this guy as the OP IRL:

For the first page I thought this guy was serious, and almost sympathized with him a little bit.

But turns out he's just another troll. Or just completely delusional.

I don't sympathize with religious folks who want to bend everyone else over for the accommodation of their quirky beliefs.

 Apparently that guy got his identity stolen.

My community believes identifying numbers are the mark of the devil

Then stop using the internet, troll. You have all kinds of ID numbers everywhere on the interwebz.

F for effort.

I found this hilarious  No offense to the dutch 😀

don't see how you can go through being a physician without having a number attached to you, which is inevitable to happen.

Why not? By the way, they like to call themselves Indian, despite what the media tells you. Indians are pretty much like the Amish themselves.

Really? Are you being serious? Interesting generalization...

You haven't been to the Netherlands have you?
