St. James school of medicine

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No offense to oldpro, especially since I really like his posts. But, as a former student at sj, at least for a few weeks back in Jan 05, I highly recommend you go anywhere else. I am in a $4,000 lawsuit with them now. Best wishes!

never heard of the school myself.

I do not take offense, there were many problems, unlike the SMU crowd I'm happy to tell you, there is a transfer clause, any school within 25 miles of SJSM ( Xavier mostly) you pay 4k to transfer, thats because Xavier came on the school grounds then when the police came to just outside the school and told students about a lot of things that were untrue, Cadavers, they did not have and professors they stole from SJSM ( so I was told and read on VMD). They left to go to Aruba within a year because of many of the things they did here on Bonaire.

SB went to Xavier as a transfer, Xavier is a for profit school charges more in tuition, SJSM is a nonprofit school and chages less tuition and runs the school lean, they have made many improvements

SJSM has since Jan 05
a New Dean
New professors All PHD and MD
improvements to the classrooms
Cadaver lab
New clinical sites
Library with resources, wireless internet free, 14 computers
Active AMSA on Campus
You are allowed to arrange own clinicals, electives and cores.

Things still needed
Better facilities
Books in Library for every course some are there but not all, many other text books though, Longer library hours, and internet on 24/7 would be nice.
Approval from NY (ACCM just visited to accredit) This approval will be for clinicals Grads can be Licensed there now
better communication with students ( still lacking in some ways)
School does not help with housing, the SGA does, school needs more involvement.

The biggest two things about the school I wish were better is there is no NY nor FL approvals (Has to do with clinicals not final Licensure) California may be in the future but not at the moment ( California you cannot be Licensed there without the school approved) and it may take another year for this, Xavier does not have these either, (BTW SB left Xavier too) ALso the buildings are old but have airconditioning. The newer students are good, most have good undergrad GPAs and some have Masters.

PM me if you wish :luck:

BTW I will not defend but will post facts and opinion, if you know something about SJSM that I do not or did not post please do so this is what the forum is for, to "tell it like it is". I know there may be something I may have forgotten? But this is what I know from attending the school so it's mostly opinion with some facts, Xavier I only know from what I've been told and read the stories on VMD.

Just cause I've been around on the forum since then doesn't mean I know anything about the School.

I never ran across that school when I was looking into caribbean schools when applying.

there are a ton of schools in teh carribean.

ST JAMES WILL NOT GET APPROVED BEFORE LIKE 20 OTHERS IN LINE FIRST FROM MY RESEARCH ST JAMES DOES NOT LOOK LIKE IT WILL FOR A LONGGG TIME

Yeah You may be right?

But if the ACCM does approve the school (Same Org that approved SMU and SABA and the big 4) I think its a good start?

I dont take this personal, I just attend the darn school and I knew what it was when I came here.😎

If it takes a few years for the school to achieve the needed improvements then great if not, I guess it will end up as others (Spartan comes to mind) Our dean taught at SGU for a dew years way back when, I was told a story of how one of the Big four the classes where out of a hotel lobby years ago when they started the first year. St. James seemed to have not been started with a lot of capital, thats a disadvantage for sure.

I did fine my first and only set of tests after the first 2- 3 wks there. Oldpro is right, and yes I left Xavier after 3 weeks as well (horrible teaching). If I could not have handled it, I would not be a 4th semester at SMU. I'm glad to hear they are making improvements; I hope it works out for you oldpro. I hate sj, but I have always liked the students who were there with me. I have no hard feeloings against the students there now and wish them the very best. I just hope sj does not put the screws to them in the long run. Please be careful. Best wishes!

I KNOW WHY YOU FAILED OUT OF 2 SCHOOLS ALREADY,,TOO MUCH TIME WASTED HERE TALKING ABOUT ABSOLUTELY NOTHING..SAVE YOUR PARENTS THE MONEY AND GET A CITY JOB IN DETROIT

First, I pay, not my parents. Second, I have yet to flunk out of any school, including the med schools. Best wishes!🙂

Thanks oldpro, may i ask u how long u been at st. James ? i don't care about NY approval, i don't intend to live there any way. would i be able to get licensed in other states such as TN,FL,AL,Ga?

it looks like u are having a good time in Island hooping.

Hoping? I'm just kidding. But, yes I am having a great time in med school, especially now that I am going to be going to AUA or Sint Eustatius, if I am fortunate to be accepted. I am really looking forward to moving up and continuing my ascent up the medical ladder. Having a great time, and I really enjoy this forum. We have sooo much more freedom to express ourselves. I really like the folks on this site as well. We all debate, but have great fun going at each other a little. I really like it here. I think there are going to be some great docs who are posting here. Best wishes!🙂

GO TO SLEEP NOW YOU HAVE TO WAKE UP EARLY FOR MUSIC CLASS

How long would it take for ACCM to give an approval (hopefully)?

My only hang up with SJSM at this time is :
1) No NY approval, and thus no clinical rotations in NY
2) No licensed grads anywhere (as far as I know?)

I know of two Lic to happen this year

I was also interested in SJ. When I called the SJ admissions department the lady could not tell me anywhere a SJ graduate has been licensed. Not one place. She did say that Georgia might license in the future. Also the clincal rotations listed on the SJ website were not accurate. Not one of the hospitals listed currently accepted SJ students. SJ is not approved in NY< FL< TX< or CA.👎

OVERALL STJ LOOKS LIKE A WEAK CHOICE,,PLUS I WOULD NOT TAKE ANY ADVICE FROM ANYONE WHO JUMPS AROUND TO DIFFERENT SCHOOLS WITHIN A YEAR

I don't have stock in SJSM, so there is no reason to cheerlead for me. But I think it's way too early to have any graduates for SJSM. At least ppl who started in their MD1 class in 2001(?) could not have made it to a fully licensed MD yet. Not enough time. Same goes for AUA, BTW, though they've managed to get NY. Congrats to them on this accomplishment. But around $ 4,500 vs $10,000 per semester for the diet coke vs diet pepsi, if you get my drift.

whole bunch of residents from sjsm have temporary licensure however. permanent licensure will not be problem granted its not cali,fl., new mexico

Yes you are right about the approvals but the there are only 4 schools that are Cali approved in the Caribbean.

NY is only for clinicals not Lic
Fl is only for clinicals and not Lic
Tx is only for Clinicals and Not LIc

SO whats the big deal about these states and clinicals? DOes it really matter so much? Tx and NY have few spots for Carribean schools to do clinicals anyway? So really I think this is just a Bragging thing Cheerlead away !

Dont go to SJSM if these things are important, in fact I think the Big 4 are a better choice, but this is not the problem with SJSM , the Big 4 have 20 years on them.

Please do not go to a school without doing your own research. ACCM has justed visited for evaluation I will post good or bad outcome.
If the school can get accredited by them then the school has told us NY then FL, California in the future but the school has to have everything ready for Cali they do not want what happened to others happen to them.

:luck:

I don't care what school I go to as long as I can get licensed after everything is said and done. SJ seems like a good choice but what scares me is the licensing issue. After all, that is a HUGE issue. SJ's admissions department was VERY vague on the licensing issue which has scared me to death.

COST IS TRIVIAL IF THE SCHOOL IS NOT GOOD,,,CHEAP IS CHEAP IS CHEAP SCHOOLS NEED MONEY TO ATTRACT GOOD TEACHERS JUST LIKE A BUSINESS NEEDS MONEY TO ATTRACT CUSTOMERS,,THATS WHY STJ IS WHERE ITS AT NOW AND OTHERS ARE PULLING AWAY PERSONALLY STJ IS NOT A GOOD CHOICE I FEEL YOU CAN SLICE IT ANYWAY YOU WANT BUT THE SONG STILL REMAINS THE SAME

How do you know the professors are not good? One taught at Yale in the US and the others are practicing MD's, another taught at SGU for years.

how can you make such comments with out knowing the facts? Spartan costs less and SABA ist not that much more?

Look I'm not defending the school but the facts should be aired. The Problems with SJSM is not the professors nor the cost of tuition, its the building to most. It's an old building needing constant repair. The library needs better hours and more material like more copies of the texts we are using, The admin needs to treat the students with more respect overall. These are some of the things SJSM needs. The professors for the most part are very good. :meanie:

No disrespect to the students of sj, especially old pro, but sj has been around for more than enough years to have some practicing docs. They were around for years before I got there. You have to be very very careful about sj; I seriously doubt they are going to get accreditation by anyone. Be careful, because you may be the one paying for it years down the road. I have heard, complete rumor, but still have heard that many have left sj years down the road because of residency and licensing issues. They are very unhappy about what has happened to them, and truly wind up regretting their decision to go to sj. I do not know of them personally, but they are out there. Maybe you can check some old posts on the sj site for valumcrap and try to track them down with pms. Best wishes!🙂

I don't think that most States would give much grief for permanent licensure, except for the usual suspects. All of these schools are pretty much structured the same way. Those that have been around longer have some fruit on the tree. And some of it is quite rottened. Back then it was really an unchartered territory. Saba just got most of their approvals 3-4 years back, and Cali just in 2004. So all these doctors you see practicing already didn't really have the benefit of their school being the 4 th best choice in the Carib, when they were still students. And S.J, at least according to the documents, was chartered in January 2001. So, only the transfer students in their first MD 1,2,3,4 (?) class could reach fully licensed MD level by now. Even if ppl do 3 year residency, the original 2001 MD 1 could be PGY II the most at this time. Do your math. But school really should monitor and "fish" for their first grads. That's what count at the end.
