When you are working in the ER, do you ever have an opportunity to sit down and rest your legs (i.e., looking at a patient's chart). I currently work 12 hr shifts where I stand the whole time and my legs and knees hurt quite considerably afterwards. Also, what are some good shoes for men that I can perhaps buy. I have heard NewBalance and Rockport. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks,

Eccos are GREAT, as are Clark's, the hubbie and I both have some.

Crocks.

Sit down everytime you talk to a patient, even if only for a minute. Its good for them and good for you.

I wear crocs without the holes in the toes

This advice is GOLD. Patients THINK they're getting more time with you when you sit down (it's been studied). You look like Marcus Welby and Martin Arrowsmith all rolled into one at the same time, especially if you do the "yes, go on" thing, and resist the urge to interrupt for the first minute.

One you get it down, you can get the patients to feel that they are saying what they want to, you get the data, and you are still efficient.

I like a good pair of court shoes or cross-trainers (just like Bo Jackson). Running shoes did not work because I get blisters on the side from stop and go. I have good pair of new balance court shoes - they were once white, but now they have character

I hate the open heel clogs, but some people swear by the super light weight ones the RN's wear. Anyone use them?

I'm on pair #3 of Danskos. I love the damn things - I wore one pair out so badly that my foot came through the leather in the middle of a shift.

It did not make a good impression on the patient. Luckily, one of the HPD trucks came in, and an EMT had some duct tape.

Wonderful stuff, duct tape!

Danskos and those thicker comfort socks are the perfect combination for me.

Agree with ERMudPHud, sit down when youc an with the patient. It gives them the illusion that you are in the room much longer.

I wear a shirt and tie and lab coat during the am/afternoon/evening shifts (scrubs during night shift or fast track). I have a nice pair of Sketchers dress shoes. They look real nice and are relatively comfortable during work.

For scrubs i wear sneakers, but also have a pair of merrel's. They're pretty comfortable but make my feet sweat. Which makes them stinky when I get home. But that's basically only for my wife and dog to enjoy the stank because I have a bad sense of smell.

Dude, did you see my response?

you know what would be mega awesome....

portable bilateral SCD's!!!!! oh, how good would that feel?

and for once, I wouldn't come home with 2+ pitting edema from standing all day

I'm a Merrell girl, myself. I 😍 my Merrells! (I have some Danskos, and the Merrells are far and away better for my feet.)

Agreed on the Birkis! I wear Birkenstock Professional clogs for 8/12 hour shifts. I have a terrible back, and I give you my word that I have few if any of those terrible chronic back aches while wearing my clogs. Plus it's cool if they get dirty.

Some places allow them. I have gotten enough blood and betadine on my shoes to not want the ones with holes in them.

I like Earth Shoes (which tend to be a less expensive version of Merrells). But after 6 1/2 years of constant standing (not the entire time, but pretty damn close) there is no singular answer. Everyone's feet is different and you just have to go through enough brands/types to find the right ones for you. Then buy up a ton of them before they are discontinued. 😉

Asics with nice superfeet insoles in em. I own the ED birks but cant wear em, scrubs catch in em and they fall off if I walk at more than a leisurely pace.

for comfy shoes, you can't get any better than Born's... I have 3 pairs and LOVE them... not cheap (about $85 a pair) but totally worth it....
