There is a PGY-2 spot DEFINITELY becoming available starting July 1, 2009 at Stanford Hospital. Its a great program but I have to leave for personal reasons. PLease contact the program director even if you did not interview for the categorical program in 2008.

How often do programs in this situation actually take other residents? I guess if there is a transfer from UCLA/UCSF/Hopkins or something then it would be ok? Doesn't this kinda stuff make a program look bad? Just wondering. Good luck with everything in the future.

No, this happens...particularly in IM. It's usually when someone quit to do derm or radiology, or maybe the hospital just expanded or something. An occasional open spot in a program is not a warning sign of anything bad...I've seen open spots at other top 20-30 hospitals...it is not unusual.
