Start date of most path residencies?

I'm applying to path residencies next year and was wondering when most programs start? July 1st or are there usually orientations that start earlier i.e. mid June? Thanks!!

Not exactly July 1st, but not much earlier, maybe 25th of June or later. There isn't as much orientation with path compared to starting internship on the wards. I believe my programs started something like 6/27 or so for orientation to get email, ID, basic intro to the EMR, handwashing and fire safety nonsense, etc.

Same here. We had two weeks of orientation and officially started in the pathology department on July 1st.

At least some of that orientation is general GME/hospital orientation which might start ~2 weeks early to coincide with other programs' early schedules. While unfortunately a chunk of that is pretty much irrelevant to path residents, one is theoretically still "required" to do it. There always seems to be some tool or two who mostly gets out of it, but there are a few things the dogs will chase you down to do all the same, else there will be much paranoid whining and threats. Take it as an opportunity to get to know a few new residents from other disciplines if you can, set up a few shindigs or whatever. The actual pathology orientation will usually follow with or without a gap of a few days, but obviously more relevant -- some programs try to basically start teaching you basic grossing, etc., in a big group rather than repeating it every time a newbie starts a surg rotation, but I'm not convinced it actually helps much (vs just learning on rotation) other than as an opportunity to get more comfortable in the department. YMMV.

You should be able to get a very reasonable idea of how early you need to be there from your program essentially immediately, even during interviews I suppose -- it shouldn't change much from year to year even if it varies a lot from program to program. Certainly expect a week or two, I can't imagine needing more than that. But don't expect to get paid for that time until you "officially" start on July 1.
