Hi everybody,

maybe you can help me with this

I just decided to get into a dental school in maximum next 2 years,
I graduated in engineering overseas and did not pass dental prerequisites yet(if I did I had to retake them in US again).

I want to start going college from this summer to pass the prerequisites but before that want to read some books to get myself ready(since don't have much time),because I'm totally new with science, I really need help with knowing which books are suitable for me to start with, I'm just talking about Chemistry and Biology and English requirements.as an engineer I may not have problem with math and...

I appreciate if you guys share some information with me.

Download the syllabus from the actual class you'll be taking... if you are not able to download it, contact the professor who teaches the class directly and ask him what book he'll be using and what chapters he'll be going through.

Thanks to both of you,

Doc toothache ,actually I read the previous version of the book you linked for me, there is some useful information in order decisioning about schools and knowing the process of admission to a dental school. but there is no source introduced for studying DAT materials.

dental works:
I searched community college for biology and I found some book names.
one of them is : CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY /auth: ENGER What do you think about it?
is it enough for DAT?

Only buy textbooks that your classes require. Buying the wrong textbook will not help you at all. You are going to a community college? When classes start, read the syllabus and buy the textbook when the semester starts. I doubt that syllabi are available this early for the summer semesters, so just wait.

Don't worry about DAT prep materials at this point. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, just focus on pre-reqs.

If you take the trouble to search the ADA website you will find a list of textbooks they recommend for reviewing the material for the DAT.

What is this searching you speak of. I just make threads on SDN and ask for links.

Ok, thanks
I've not searched the ADA, I thought the book you you introduced is containing that information, that's why I did not find anything.🙂

if you first read "carefully" the topic I made, specially in TITLE, you would find out that I AM NEW WITH SCIENCE AND NEW IN UNITED STATES, so I just asked for some sharing experiences by writing the book names not links.everybody knows that finding THIS forum needs more search on internet than ADA.

think before judge people.

thanks,
Maybe you are right, I have to focus on my prerequisites first,I was just worried about biology and chemistry, because I never study them during my undergrad study.

You should focus on your pre-reqs first.
You are worrying too much. Not necessary now. 😴

maybe you are right,

I just wanted to take a look at the content , the most scariest thing was biology for me, I like it, but never had it in school,

I agree with psychoboylol123...

You are worrying WAYYYY too much. The classes you'll be taking (typical pre-dent requirements) are designed to be taught to students who have zero background. Just relax, and when your semesters start, expect to study hard

If your plan is to get into dental school within the next 2 years, you will need to rush those pre-dent requirements. I dunno if you've planned it out yet, but you will need AT LEAST 2 full time semesters to complete your Writing, physics, Biology, General Chemistry, and organics courses.

Plus you said you've obtained a degree from another country.... you might wanna check with the dental schools you'll be applying to, some schools require specific number of USA college credits before matriculation.

One more thing, I dunno how much exposure you have to the application process, but you are required to get letters of recommendation (LOR) from your professors. Keep this in mind when your taking your pre-requisites, keep a good relationship with ur professors so they write you good LORs

thanks, that was very useful...
but I think I need to take 45 units(and some extra to cover my lack of gpa) and as I know in college I can take 15+20 every year.-please correct me if I'm not well informed-
they are essential for entering the school, but are they cover whole DAT contents?(except math and 3d-2d problems)
I searched every school in California(since I am living in CA) and ind out that almost all of schools desire students to pass JUST prerequisites in US
and That was a Great advice about LORs I'll try to not forget it.

A fulltime undergrad Student can easily obtain more than 30 credits per year, here is what I mean:
-Spring term starts in January and ends first week of May
-Fall term starts in September and ends first week of December
-Summer term(s) is between May till August ~ many student don't usually take summer classes, but you should, it'll help you finish faster.

Each class you'll be taking will be approx 3-4 credits. So, taking 4 classes (Writing, Biology, General chem, and physics ~ for example) will be approx 12-16 credits. Thats a fulltime undergrad load and it DOESN'T EVEN INCLUDE labs. Each lab is (in most schools) 1 credit..... In ur particular case, if you going to utilize the Spring, Summer, and Fall terms, you can easily hit 30+ credits in 1 year..... Please note, everything I just described above is for the credit system, some schools use the "quarter" system meaning you need to convert

The DAT is (the sciences portion) a review of the Biology, General Chem, and orgo. So the pre-req classes will teach you what you need to know for the DAT.... the problem most of us pre-dents come across is, we forget most of that stuff come DAT time

Good luck to you, feel free to ask more questions
