Hi,

I am a foreign grad dentist, have already passed NDB exam both part 1 & 2, but didn't get admission in the advanced standing programs. Now I want to start from scratch, going back to dental school.

Has anybody tried this route? Any experiences? How long will it take?

Mega

i am so sorry but i couldent understand you, do you mean doing the regular 4 year admission? or reapplying to the ASP all over again?

Yes, I meant to say reapplying to dental school for the 4 year DDS program from start.

what are your scores, maybe you wanna seek a better advice by giving your profilr. like TOEFL, NBD 1 and 2, gpa etc.

hi Mega

I wanted to get info about the regular DDS but the colleges want the DAT scores and i thought it was easier to go through NBDE again then DAT.

The univ i was intrested in told me that since i dont have a green card they would consider me a out of state resident & they only take 10 % out of state resident. SO u can imagine what the chances r.

Where r u planning to apply ????? Did u take DAT ???????

BOND

Thanks for your response. Here is a question for you Bond- where did you apply? Did they accept your pre-requisites ?
I am considering applying to University of Michigan as I am a MI resident & green card holder. I don't know if it wil make a difference. I also cosider DAT as difficult especially the perceptual ability part, but I don't have any other choice as my scores in the NDB are not good enough.

So what are you doing now Bond? Retaking NDB???????????????

Please someone help me out here, retake NDB or go back to school?????????????? I don't know what to do????????

Mega
I applied in university of iowa and they dont have a forigen trained program they said that d if they accept me then they will make me do 3 or 3and half year, but i dont have a green card so i am a state resident for tution purposes but not admission. So i got rejected cuz of my not being a state resident.

Well mega if they would have accepted me in univ of iowa i would have stayed here for sure.reason being (i am waisting this year anyways)

I would be able to stay in my home.
It costs almost one forth of what it would cost in AS programm
I know it is a 1-2 year more then AS programm but y not do it instead of waiting for another year.

Yes i am taking my NBDE again & praying to get my GC by that time too.

And yes having a GC makes a lot of difference in regular admission of DDS atleast thats what they told me here.SO call ur univ and ask them directly.

Mega u have to decide what works best for u. So did u already take DAT ????? explore all ur options before u make ur final decision.

My friend has an MD degree from another country, and practiced 10yrs as an orthopedic surgeon. However, when he came to the states, he thinks dental school is his calling. Do you guys know anyone with a similar situation? If he wants to go to d-school now, does he have to get a bachelor degree in the states? Or a foreign medical degree would be sufficient? He retook some classes like anatomy, physiology and other pre-req classes and did really well. However, I have a feeling that he has to take more than that to apply to d-school. If you guys know any story, please share.

Thanks

Hi Tinkerbell

I seemed to remember reading discussions like this before.
Your friend needs to take DAT and then apply for Dental school ( regular 4 year program) with his MD degree. I do not think he has to go back to college ( he can have ECE do the course- by course evaluation to validate his school training from his home country. Make sure he has all the required courses in the list) . His doctor's degree is more than enough. However, public schools like UCSF might not consider him because of his foreign status. If he has a green card/ citizen, things might be easier.

I'd recommend your friend to talk to schools that he is interested in and get specific information.

however, it is most likely that he can't skip basical medical science courses during dental school.

Hope it helps

Thanks for your response. I totally agree with you. Eventhough he has a green card, I still think that he has a better shot at private institutions rather than @ ucsf.

With a foreign MD degree some schools accept people to IDP programs. Columbia and UOP are the ones that come to my mind. Tell him to do a little homework and research. 2 years sure beat 4.

hi,
i read the post by meggs that columbia accepts international students. is it columbia state or columbia in south carolina? is this program for dds or for md for foreign trained med students? 😕

Hi,

I called different dental schools to find about the DDS program but they want me to complete 2 yr of pre-dental college first as my pre-requisites don't meet their requirements so that means it will take 6 yrs to complete DDS program. I can't do that.

Now I am leaning towards retaking NDB. My situation is, I have graduated in 1999 & completed 1 yr residency in 2000 back home. Since then I haven't being in touch with the field, now my question is even if i improve my score in NDB , will the educational gap effect my admission in the AS program?

Is there anyone in my situation, please help?????????? 🙁

Hi Mega,
I am not exactly in same situation as you are,but i am retaking nbde and yes after agood time gap also, and i am looking for a study partner or someone who can keep it going,if you wanna join in you can email me or send a message here.we might be ahelp to each other.

Thanks Dentaldream, I am a bit encouraged by you. When are you taking NDB? I was so discouraged that I had started looking into dental hygiene program, thought at least something is better than nothing!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure when I will be retaking part1, but the sooner the better as time is clicking. I have to go through my study material. Where are you studying from? I had used Kaplan material, decks & old exam papers.

Hey Mega,
hoze you?yeah don't be discouraged..and i am glad if you are encouraged by me,though i am feeling very confused and disoriented about this whole thing.
but i want to study good and get some what better score than before.
i am using dental deck and released exams,i do ve the kaplan book, but will only use it for reference.
where re you in usa?
good luck.
