I don't think its good idea to buy private practice right after dental school.
I would look into residency program for at least 1 year. then may be work for someone else for least 1 year. and Still I don't think its still too late.
I graduated 2002 from NYU and did residency at VA (NJ) then I worked few offices. I took over older Dr. practice 2004. 100% financed, 3 chairs, I also took over 90% of his patients. in addition, I took over his position at the hospital as medical attending. Its been great since then.
You may want to use brokerage (professional). if you have any questions you can contact me. I will be more then happy to help you guys out. or email me at [email protected]
Finding a job as associate can be hard and do not pay well. especially if you get paid by 1099, you will have to pay the tax end of the year and if you didnt save up to pay tax can be a big blow to your bank account. also if you get 35-40 collections, if the practice didnt collect from the patient or insurance company, you will not get paid for the service you provided to the patient.
There are lots of tricks that office can pull, you have know all these before you start working. This is reason why I give lecture in VA and Mountainside to my GPRs about how to find jobs and what to look for when you goto the interviews. Also we talk about pro and cons of opening up a practice or take over. I do assist and guide them into right direction which ever direction they want to go. It can be opening up new practice or trying to take over a dental practice. I also have few of my other dentist from local Dental associations who wants to retire as well.
Again, try not to start out brand new practice because its kind of risky right now. may people lost jobs therefore they lost insurance, financial area does not look better at this point. Hopefully it will get better. I think Taking over practice the best way to go. Even though the old practice has little out dated equipments and not digital x-rays, you will have number of patients to work with and you can grow that practice in no time. Having brand new office with state of the art equipments and digital x-rays and NO patients will not pay your bill.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me through [email protected] I will be more then happy to help.
