Hi Fellow SDNers,

I want to start some sort of organization/program at my school (that is already established at other campuses). Do you guys have any ideas or suggestions of any such programs. I have a couple of ideas but I'm just wondering what other pre-meds have done and see if it's more interesting than what I was thinking about 🙄

Thanks everyone,
Mojo

check out globemed -- some of my friends started that up at my school.

I started a CPR education program for high schools and my university. PM me for details & ideas.

It seems weird to go looking for something to start. You should start something you think needs starting. If it doesn't need started, then don't start it for starting's sake. That said, there's always something needing to be started. What is lacking at your school?? Fill the void.

I agree. How can you say you want to start an organization but you're not sure which one? I hope Admissions Committees realize what they are doing to aspiring MDs.

What about starting an organization that tutors underprivileged children? Or starting a big brother/big sister club at your school. I would think adcoms would eat that stuff up.

Totally agree. Do something only because it comes from the heart. Do not do it jsut to boost your resume.

I already have a couple of ideas in mind and just wanted to see what other pre-meds were up to. Just bouncing ideas - you know like what they do on a forum. And if you're going to start getting clever/cynical by starting to play with words, at least start getting your grammar straight for starters' sake. 😉

Have an interest. Seek out opportunities to fulfill that interest. If there are none, start your own program. Not the other way around.

Consider starting a chapter of Students for Organ Donation (click on the link in my signature). It's an opportunity to gain significant leadership experience while making a difference in an important public health issue. Check it out! 👍

/end cheesy advertisement 😉

Start a club that discovers a pill that can cure cancer, AIDS, and world hunger all in one shot.

I'm sorry you're so boring that you couldn't think of anything useful to say. Even your joke was lame and old. Sad and pathetic.

Seriously, I don't understand why a troll thread like "My gay friend is thinking about sleeping with his professor to get an A" gets more responses than one that is actually asking something relevant to this process. And even threads like "what are my chances", "School A vs. School B" and "why medicine" are totally ignored/flamed even though they are relevant to a board like this. I'm not sure what you can post on SDN and actually get a serious discussion going.

Cobalt31, thatslife, NCF145 and SanDiegoSOD - thanks for the constructive responses. SanDiegoSOD, although I have mad respect for the organ donor organization, I would feel awkward starting something like that when I wouldn't sign up myself (for personal reasons). So there people, I wouldn't do something I'm not 1000% behind simply to fluff up my resume. And in all honesty, I don't see any business majors doing stuff like this - although I'm sure it interests pre-meds more, let's be real - part of it is for the application. And that isn't a bad thing - you're helping yourself while helping others. I'm just willing to admit that it isn't completely altruistically motivated - for those of you that would rather live in a "I'm Mother Teresa and all my actions are only to save the world" bubble, put your money where your mouth is and don't include this stuff in your app *cough* MiesVanDerMom *cough*.

Rant over

I'm sorry, but when you don't even have any specific requirements it sounds like you're just trying to do something to make your application look better.
If you had gotten on here and said that your school was located in an area of Boston where there was no mentoring program for inner city kids and you were wondering what kind of nationwide program you could partner with that would have been different than: I want to start an organizaiton; any ideas?

Dude, I have ideas but it does not look like they will materialize. I just wanted to see what others were up to and how they went about making sure their plans actually came into being. Can you pretend the title of the thread is "What sorts of programs/organizations have pre-meds started on their campus?" You can? Ok cool, thanks!

Thanks for the sarcasm, but that doesn't address the basic problem. You're looking to start an organization for the sake of starting an organization not because you're so passionate about something in particular...

cut the crap - you wanted to see what others were up to so you could see what you're up against...

Dr. Mojo- You'd probably find more response to a thread like this if you didn't jump up and attack everyone whose ideas you disagreed with or whose humor you didn't like.

If you want solely constructive feedback, talk to a pre-med advisor. If you want to start a thread on a public web forum, expect some snide and disparaging comments, and even jokes.

You got 4 solid, positive comments. Outside of your original post, all three of your posts were pissy. Just food for thought.

Just because you came to that conclusion does not mean it is true. If I wanted to start an organization just to start an organization, I would start the organ donor organization SDSOD referenced. Please refer to my above posts.

Well, then what is that you're passionate about? Maybe if you're more specific we could help you...

Not true. And you know how they say - it takes one to know one so that probably would have been your motivation. Not that that's a bad thing - I was under the impression that that is what this site was for, namely helping pre-meds by giving them an informal way to learn about the process (both specifics and in general). And MDapplicants serves almost exactly the same thing you said - to let people see what they're up against - again I don't see anything wrong with that so even though your statement is untrue, if it were true, I don't see how that is the sort of horrible intention you make it out to be.

You're right.

And I thanked them for their comments.

But I thought you just said that on a web forum, I should expect some disparaging comments and even jokes. How come you label people's responses as such and my attempts of retaliation (which I honestly did not mean to be mean-spirited) "pissy". I just went along with the tone and tried to remain somewhat civil while still having a couple of laughs. The "sad and pathetic" may have been overboard but I've seen worse on the forums. Far worse.

So I feel like you and everyone else is attacking me and not vice versa.

try applying starting a local chapter of HealthCare Volunteer at your school if it doesn't already have one.

www.healthcarevolunteer.com/jobs

apparently you can lead volunteering trips abroad and in the local community if you get selected to be the local chapter president.

That is something I would be really interested in but it would NOT have crossed my mind. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope people can now realize the point of this thread - to show people the opportunities that are out there that they may be interested in and of whose existense they are unaware.

Are there not any organizations on your campus that already would allow you to get involved with community service or overseas volunteer work?
